Showing People Up >>Bageera<<

Lately there has been a lot of lying about personal possessions, and many people trying to "outdo" eachother with experiences etc.

There is a girl I'm sort of friends with named Halima. Now, Halima has some serious issues with faking it, and tries to show up practically anyone she meets. The thing which makes it funny though, is that what she says is 90% unbelievable in the first place, and she forgets what she had told the next day.

Once, Keysha, Halima and I were on the grass during PE chatting. Halima then brought up "I got 300 cable channels yesterday" then waited for some sort of comment. Keysha and I already sussed out what she might say, so we asked how and what she got.

"Well we have this new cable, called Foxtus (doesn't "Foxtus" seem a bit like a combination of Foxtel and Optus to you?) and you can import channels from overseas. So we have 50 channels from American cable TV, 50 channels from Chinese TV, 50 channels from Russia and stuff like that. It comes in on this massive satellite and it's almost as big as my roof and EVERYONE on my street is jealous and tries to be our friend now so they can watch our TV"

Keysha and I rolled our eyes and just left it.

The next day, we were on the grass again and Keysha mentioned that she got a satellite the day before.

Halima: "Ohh that is sooo cool... I wish we had a satellite and cable, that'd be so cool"

It's not just the people who show others up then forget their lies that I'm talking about. It's just random conversation as well.

On Wednesday during my lunch break from work experience I went to my school to hand in my photography book and since it was lunch at school as well, I went to visit my friends and to see if Chaz was there (he hadn't been there Monday or Tuesday).

Luckily, Chaz was there, but as I came near the steps I heard a guy who sometimes hangs around us say "Yeah? Well my mum isn't ALLOWED parole" then Chaz gave him a death stare and said "You trying to show me up there buddy?"

I honestly don't understand why people feel the need to show others up or outdo them. Sure, you can have fun with it, like with what Halima said you could imbellish more on it, claiming you have 5 hot pink satellites and a pet crocodile who tunes it in, but the people who do it just to seem better just make me wonder if they're just trying to cover their own faults. That's what I've been lead to believe.

What are all of your thoughts on the whole "showing up" thing? Do you think that it's just what teenagers do? Or what?

Date: 6/4/2004 5:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 62675    IT is not just teenagers!! Most people do it, it is human nature. "keeping up with the Jones" is another. I have friends that do it, and I have even caught myself mid sentance doing it. But it does drive me nuts when it gets excessive!! -Sunni818

Date: 6/4/2004 7:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Ohh I know all too well what you're talking about.. I've lived 18 years with a cousin who is a pathological liar. It's terrible.
Date: 6/4/2004 11:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    like sunni said, it's not just teenagers! there was a couple that used to come to our house every weekend (my husband's friend and his wife--now ex-wife) and she copied everything i did and said. if i bought new pice to hang on the wall so did she. we went to their house one night after not going there for about six months and it was scary. she had copied my living room and kitchen right down to the liquid soap dispencer!!! i don't think i do that. i really don't see the point in it. you either have something or you don't. the way i see it is, i have less than some and more than others so i'll just be satisfied with what i got and forget about it. some people are strange!!
Date: 6/4/2004 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    I don't know what it is, but it is sort of funny to watch people get caught up in their own lies though, see ya later 'G'ageera, j/k P)
Date: 6/4/2004 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Nope- sorry to disappoint you but it's definitely NOT just teenagers. I am 32 and I still run into people my own age and older that have to try to show me up. When I talk about my daughter, there is a girl in my nursing school that just HAS to one up what I say by saying something about her daughter. It happens everywhere..and I honestly don't know why people have to do it either- jealousy maybe?? Or maybe to try to fit in?? Maybe wishful thinking..
Date: 6/4/2004 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    It's called "Interpersonal Competition" and it's done all the time, at all ages. People who do it have a need to be better than others, no matter what. I think it's an outgrowth of ego. I don't play that game, I just grunt or don't pay any attention.
Date: 6/5/2004 12:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 62588    =) I used to be guilty of this - not excessively (I hope) but if I couldn't remember the details (ie my brother's race car goes 11 seconds on a quarter mile) I'd say what sounded good (it went 10 seconds). My boyfriend caught me in that one last week. I didn't mean to lie, but he was having a conversation, and I just wanted to fit and so I said what I thought was true. I think that's it for most people, just wanting to fit in. By the way, tell me what happened with Chaz? Did his weekend go okay? Is he still getting harrassed at school? Did you get his phone number? He'll stay in my prayers
Date: 6/5/2004 1:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 26452    Ohhh yeah, lol I used to be friends with a 3 girls like that, it was ridiclous, one day she'd say her mom forces her to go to Church, then literally the next day her mom is a "3rd generation witch" my boyfriend is also friends with a guy like that, hes actually a really nice guy, but my goodness I hate being around him because I can barely keep my mouth shut when he lies.
