JUST AN OLD HAT

JUST AN OLD HAT

Just an old hat, tattered and worn
White and blue, stained and torn
Hanging on a door’s knob
Waking at a touch

Eyes close to dream
A small child, an older man
A snatch and laughter giving chase
Running times fingers through the sand of lives

Eyes open through memory’s waking dream
A child’s smile touches adult lips and fades
Tears shimmer and run, gentle fingers touch
The hat that embodies memory and dream, Dad

Happy Fathers Day Dad!

Date: 6/3/2004 8:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 62744    It is a good poem. I've read it a few times now and its made me stop and think about why (other than sometimes the direliction of duty) I go out and buy my father a Father's Day gift. I took it for granted before, but I don't think I will so much after reading this. Very well done
Date: 6/20/2004 5:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    This is beautiful. I think of my own father and the hat he proudly wears that displays a picture of his ship the U.S.S. North Carolina. I bet he has it on today. Have a good day sweetie!
