Hey guys and gals,

Yesterday I inherited a solid white albino ferrett and I know absolutely nuthin about them! Can anyone clue me in?

What do they like to eat?

Will they use a liter box?

Are albino Ferretts rare?

Do they have to get shots like cats and dogs?

Can you bathe them?

OH, and does anyone know a really kewl Gothic name for a boy? Right now, I am just calling him Cracker.

One last question. I know they originated from Rome, but does anyone know if they are a member of the rat family or the squirrel family???

Hugs, Pammierose

Date: 6/3/2004 10:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 35160    i knew a girl who had 1, and it always stunk. she even had the musk sac or whatever its called removed. so you will probably have to give it baths alot. you can train them to use litter boxes too. the pet store should be able to answer alot of your questions too. and some have books you can buy.
Date: 6/3/2004 10:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    My sons had one many years ago and I bathed it becaues it stunk and it still stunk after the bath. In the end my sons give it away because of the smell.
Date: 6/3/2004 10:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    you can bathe them but get ferret shampoo... they usually live in a cage with woodchips some will use an actual literbox but mine always turned it over they love tunnels(things like pringles tubes or small round long boxes) and they eat ferret food... or cat food... i always fed mine cat food because it was sooo much cheaper... they sleep about 20 hours of the day and the other 4 they like to run around and be active... they dont really make noises... umm what else*L*(i had a ferret for about two years)
Date: 6/3/2004 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    i will say ferrets do smell...even with thier "stink glad" removed... so it's good to bathe it every time you change up the liter in the cage(aka ever week or two)
Date: 6/3/2004 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    oh oh oh before i forget*LOL* when you let your ferret out keep it away from soft rubbery things.. like remote buttons... or telephone buttons they LOVE LOVE LOVE to chew on those sorts of things and chew on little things like nylon
Date: 6/3/2004 10:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Oh this one hates his cage..he wants to be out running around all the time or he gest mad at me and he loves to be on top of my feet..lol. He doesn't smell too bad..I hope it stays that way. The animal shelter just gave him to me..maybe whoever had him before had that musk sac removed. I have no clue. Thanks yall for the info. He is snow white with lil beady red eyes..but he's sooooooooooooooooooooo cute..lol. Hugs,
Date: 6/3/2004 10:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 49101    My room mate and I had one a few years ago. He was AWESOME! Now my room mate was a SUPER neat FREAK and I don't HOW she did it, but the little guy never stank. He would chase us around the kitchen and made a little barking sound when he did. As far as how to take care of them, just keep a close eye if he is loose, because there are many household items they can get hurt with, Vacuum cleaners, mop buckets, exposed wires and plugs. They mischevious and very curious. HAve fun!
Date: 6/3/2004 11:19:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Well at the moment MissC, he ha vanished into thin air He had been running all over today and now I can't find him..sniff. When I do he is cage bound for sure! Hugs,
Date: 6/3/2004 12:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 58078    They are really smelly animals..lol
Date: 6/3/2004 12:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Yeah, he surfaced..he had just crawled behind a bookcase to take a nap...he's very hard to awaken..I can see this is gonna be fun...ACK! LOL Hugs,
Date: 6/3/2004 12:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    He's so dang funny! I put his cage on the floor and left it open so he can run in and out and he does. He will run inside, grab a bite of food, and then out he goes running to a corner or under a couch and hides his food. I guess he's saving it for later. Glad it's dry food. LOL Hugs,
Date: 6/3/2004 12:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Oh man, now he's discovered the dog food bowl...good thing it's dry food too!
Date: 6/3/2004 12:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 56489    They can be trained for a litter box, & I believe eat dry catfood, the do need shots & to be neutered or spayed. My mother in law had 2 of them, the male died of old ago, but the female died of cervical cancer from not being spayed.
Date: 6/3/2004 1:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Oh ouch..cervical cancer ..bummer. I will check to see if a vet in this hobokin town will even see a feret. I got him at the animal shelter..LOL they said they picked him up as he was trying to break into a bank..go figure!
Date: 6/3/2004 2:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i suggest checking your couch and bed because the fabric can often have little holes in it and they can climb up inside it
Date: 6/3/2004 3:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 62725    I had a ferret for many years. His name was Bandit. There were a couple questions un answered. No, albino ferrets are not rare. Also, if you bathe him do it with a ferret shampoo, they keep the smell from surfacing. You can also get a ferret deoderant for if he starts smelling and you already gave him a bath or something like that. Also, never, i mean NEVER let your sister near him if you have a sister. My younger sister threw mine in the dryer and killed him :'( I still miss the little guy. Most ferrets do like rubber things, but alot ferrets differ in their taste of things. For example, my cousins old ferret for some reason loved anything wool, like sweaters, winter hats, anything. Thats how he died in fact, he ate his wool hat and it messed with his digestion system. Also, if you want to use a litter pan with him, the pet store will probably have the kind that will 'attach' to the side of the cage with little hooks so he cant tip it over. About him storing food... mine only did that a few weeks before a big storm or something similar. I always fed mine ferret food, and i had some ferret snacks called bandit treats or something like that, he loved em. Ferrets are like people, each one has its own personality, just get to know him and adjust to what he likes. Well, this is long enough, so i better stop, good luck with your new ferret.
Date: 6/3/2004 3:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 62725    uh, i dont know why that posted twice, i only hit the button once, sorry bout that.
Date: 6/3/2004 3:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    Ferrets are awesome creatures. From what I've heard, you can potty train them, bathe them. They love shiny objects so hide your keys. THey are very clean, but just clean their litter everyday cause then they'll get stinky. You can train them to use a leash if youd like to take him for a walk. uuum, there's ferret food that you can buy at the pet store and have fresh water for them. think that's it...

Date: 6/3/2004 3:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    Ohhh I think you should keep his name! I think Cracker is soo cute I don't know much (anything, really) but I want one when I get a house! Guess I'd better start reading up
Date: 6/3/2004 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    My father had two at one time. I know they used a cat box, I'm not sure what they ate but it was probably similar to cat food. You can purchase everything you need for them at your local pet store. They do have a foul smell which is a glandular thing. There is a solution you can purchase to help with this. They play hard and sleep hard and generally do better with a mate. They are prone to diseases and infections just as a cat or dog so they do need to see a vet. They aren't related to a rat or a squirrel from what I know.
Date: 6/3/2004 10:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    I have one, her name is Lily and she's as cute as a button! I feed her Nutriphase which you can get at Petsmart or any pet store. They will use a litter box. Make sure you clean it out regularly because if you don't they'll go in different parts of the cage and that's never fun to deal with. I don't think the albino ferrets are that rare. I've never taken her to get any shots. I don't think they really need them. And yes you can bathe them but make sure you get a special ferret shampoo, you can give them a bath every 2 months. I usually give her a bath when she gets a bit stinky because they do have an odor. Other than that just play with him alot, my cousin had one and she kinda got tired of it and never handle hers so it became wild. I'll let lily play on my bed or run around my room but you have to becareful and watch them constantly because they can get into anything! They like to tunnel and they can squeeze there bodies into just about anything. They like to explore and get into purses, sheets, jeans, you name it!
Date: 6/3/2004 11:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    awww memories of Rocky, we named our ferret Rocky because he looked like a Racoon and from the song from the Beatles..Rocky Racoon went up to his room only to find Gideon's Bible...Well anyways that and Ferret Bueller, he had a tent and a hammock, loved them both, used the cat litter (Jonny Cat was the best brand and yay! the cheapest!) and he ate chewy cat food, I can't remember how often we bathed him but he did use Ferret Glo! Seeing that bottle made me smile b/c it was so cheesy. I've been watching the 100 Metal Moments on Vh1...so how about Lemmy from Motorhead!
