Grandmother knits 50,000 slippers for U.S. soldiers. Isn't that sweet?

I thought this was such a sweet story, I had to share it:

CLEVELAND, OH-May 26, 2004 — GIs with toasty toes have an Ohio grandmother to thank.

Irene Silliman has knitted thousands slippers for members of the U.S. military. Now, her concern for the soldiers and her fast fingers are being honored.

The 78-year-old Silliman is getting the Patriot of the Year Award, from the Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm Association. The Cleveland-area grandma has no idea how many pairs of slippers she's knitted.

She started Operation Toasty Toes in 1997 – and 50,000 pairs have been shipped from her kitchen in the past seven years.

Silliman says there are now 16 Toasty Toes chapters – knitting from coast-to-coast.
