What Do You Think Caused this? Allergic Reaction?

About six months ago, I was slicing jalapenos for a type of stew I'd found a recipe for. I've never cared for jalapenos before but my boyfriend loves them so I usually just deal with them. Anyway, after I sliced them, I immediately rewashed my hands with soap... I know pepper juice is not too nice if it happens to get into your eyes.

I did not touch my eyes, but immediately after the slicing, my eyes began to BURN bad. I took a cold shower and it took about a half an hour before my eyes became normal again.

Everything was fine then until about an hour after we actually ate some of the stew. My hands, especially my finger tips where I had touched the jalapenos started to have a burning feeling as well. The feeling kept escalating and by eight that night, my entire hands, both of them, felt like they were ON FIRE! It litterally felt as if my skin was burning away.

I tried lotion and some creams that I had in the medicine cabinet, nothing eased the pain. The only thing that seemed to help was to emmerse my hands completley in ice water. This would help for all of about ten minutes before the water would feel like a hot tub to my hands and I'd have to have new, colder water. By this time the pain was absolutely unbearable without the cold water. I tried cold rags, frozen food, and even some potholders we'd soaked and cooled in the freezer and nothing helped.

I was up with that burning feeling from 8 PM until about 5:30 in the morning. I tried to sleep, and I would sleep for a few minutes at a time with my hands soaking in a bowl of water next to my bed but soon it would become too warm and I'd wake up. I couldn't go to the hospital because I had no medical insurance and not much money so I had to put up with it.

I never did find out what the cause of this was, but I was wondering if any of you have had something like that happen before? It was one of the most painful experiences of my life!

Date: 5/7/2004 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I think it could have to do with the oil of the pepper getting on your hands...I think if it were an actual allergic reaction it wouldn't have been concentrated on the hands (and burning of the eyes) since you had eaten some in the stew....I could be wrong though.
Date: 5/7/2004 11:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    I agree with Becky, about the oil..however it could have been a localized reaction..Much like what you get when exposed to Poison Ivy(yeah I know Poison Ivy spreads)..but you get what I mean
Date: 5/8/2004 12:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    The first time I misread this and thought you said you made the stew 6 months ago, but just ate it about an hour ago. LOL...I was going to say you will probably have worse than an allergic reaction to it if it's 6 months old. I agree with Becky. If you have to deal with them again, try using those plastic gloves they use at school cafeterias and such.
Date: 5/8/2004 12:15:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    LOL! I'd be in bad shape if I was just eating the stew now! The oil thing did cross my mind but I wasn't sure because I washed my hands really really good after. The recipe called for quite a few peppers though so I had to touch a lot of them. I guess that oil could have been seeping into my skin after the first pepper I sliced. But if I thought I didn't like jalapenos before, I HATE them now!
Date: 5/8/2004 1:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 5940    This is part of the same ingredients that are used in "Pepper Spray" along with Cayene or Habenero peppers. You may be more sensitive than others.
Date: 5/8/2004 5:13:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    Ohhh, Hey Larry, I did not know that! Makes sense!
Date: 3/11/2006 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 63380    when i was 14 i ate some hot sauce rated at 2 million scoville unites. jalepenos are i think only around a thosand, but i ate this sauce called "STUPID HOT" and started sweating the hot sauce through my pores, puking, wheezing, and feeling overall like i was dying. i guess a lot of people have this reaction when they eat this synthetic hot sauce, its not designed to be consumed like i did.

well today i ate a bunch of jalepenos with popcorn. i was fine, and came back to my room to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich. after consuming these foods i lied down, and about a minute later i had an intense burning feeling in my throat, like it had been totally burned to nothing by the peppers. the peppers felt like they were trying to crawl out of my stomach. i stood over my sink for well over half an hour, wheezing, crying (my eyes were hella-watering), and burping, and unsuccessfully trying to throw up. when i was littler i used to have these spasms in my sleep and it may have been related. i suggest that you dont eat peppers or extremely hot sauce if you have these reactions. theyll only get worse like mine. what sucks is that im latino, too!
