Tonight When I Laid My Baby Down,

And Listened To His Gentle Breath,

I Saw The Sweet Smile,

And I Knew He Sighed,

I Knew He Was Dreaming Dreams,

Of Ships And Skies, And Seas.

My Little Man, So Perfect In Every Way,

Never Was There A Child More Perfect,

I Know This With A Mother's Heart.

But Then The Morning Came, And It Was Not A Child-Son But A Man,

Who's Wiskered Face Greeted Me At Breakfast,

Though I Could See The Child In The Twinkle Of His Eye,

He Rushed Through His Meal,

He Remembered To Kiss Me Quickly,

And, Then, He Was Gone.

When I Saw Him In His Uniform, I Thought Of Hallow's Eve,

A Small Child In A Costume,

A Cowboy, A Wizard, A Clown,

I Thought Of His Toy Soldiers,

Buried In The Dirt Behind The House Now,

He Looked So Tall, And Handsome, A Warrior,

I Looked At Those Hands,

The Hands That Always Sought Out Mine,

When He Was Afraid, Or Needed Comfort.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I Could Not Be There, The Last Time He Was Afraid,
I Could Not Offer Comfort.
I Know That My God Surrendered His Son,
And I Know His Son Choose To Do This Thing,
Just As My Son Choose To Do This Thing.
But A Mother's Heart Is Different,
It Can Never Understand,
Why Must Our Babies Become Men?
And Then Die In A Strange Land?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tonight, I Laid My Baby Down,

For His Eternal Sleep,

And Forever He Will Dream

Of Ships And Skies, And Seas

And Forever My Heart Will Break,

For The Child I Lost To A War-Disease

Date: 5/3/2004 7:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    you are welcome, Zema. When I visted a Military store with my folks, (my dad wanted to buy a waterproof tarp for camping), I saw a tiny uniform. It was a full-dress uniform for a toddler. At the time, my son was two years old. I remember getting a chill and thinking, "Oh, God, No! I am not raising my son to be a Soldier!". I am afraid. I am afraid the draft will be reinstated. I am afraid that this war will be the beginning of a very dark time.

Date: 5/3/2004 7:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    What a tear-jerker this poem is. How fast the world seems to grow up around us. George and I were grade-school sweethearts. When we married young, I was always afraid the military would take him in the draft. I know we have to defend our freedom, but it is so hard when it is your son or husband. Touching poem, thank you !!
