I have a few in my house, but to be honest, I have disconnected their batteries, because they scream at me when I burn food...I don't have any gas and only burn candles when I'm in the same room as the candles...I probably will go plug the batteries back though, after reading this sad post...truth is, I just forgot to re-connect them after the last burnt offerings |

That's so sad....I think we've got three....maybe four...sadly I think we've got all but one disabled. There's one by the bathroom that it would go off everytime someone took a shower so that obviously..wasn't cool..LOL |

Go put those batteries back in!! Please!! I've got one in the hall near my kitchen and sometimes it goes off while we're cooking and my husband will take the batteries out. But I always put them back in.. I'm a huge worrywart!! Even if you don't have one near your kitchen, at least put one near each bedroom, so you can wake up if there's a fire. |

LOL Nothing wakes me up at night...we had the carbon minoxide detector go off one night and mom was the ONLY one who heard it....she woke dad up in a panic and he told her not to worry and go back to sleep LOL...I never even knew it went off and that sucker is louder than a smoke detector LOL |

I must be the biggest worrywart ever. I do a nightly check before I go to bed. I make sure all doors are locked, all appliances are off. I check my stove.. I couldn't sleep without knowing everything was safe. And sometimes, I lay down in bed and wonder did I check this or did I check that? And I have to get back up again lol. I'm a little strange. My mother is the same way. I inherited it from her lol. |

There are programs that give out fire detectors. I don't think it's the $10 for a smoke detector thatis the problem in most cases. It's something that people overlook or think it's not that important. "It will never happen to me" attitude. Until it hits home, or when it's too late is when people pay attention. My friend's house caught on fire in November. The house next door was vacant. Kids lit it on fire and it spread to his house. Him and his kids were sleeping. A neighbor woke them up just in time. The smoke alarm never went off. We were trying to salvage what we could weeks later. Wouldn't you know it, the smoke alarm went off too late. The house was totaled. They managed to save a couple things. The important thing was that they made it out alive. I've got 3 smoke detectors in my house. You can never have enough. A good way to remember when to check the batteries is when you change clocks back or forth. |

Yeah I think a lot of people have the attitude that "it won't happen to me". Not me, thats one of the things that come along with being a huge worrywart, I think everything bad is gonna happen to me lol. Yeah, they are certainly not a guarantee that you will get out safe, but why not improve your chances if you can? And I'm glad your friends family made it out alive, so many people don't. |

Not only the 'it won't happen to me' attitude I'm sure many fail to make sure the batteries in the detectors still work. |

We have smoke dectors in every room that are powered by the power to the house. When the power goes out, there are back up batteries. We had to get them to stay up to code when we added 3 bedrooms, a walk-in closet and a bathroom. it was part of the "up to code" process. |

We have 2 here, one we have to keep disconnecting though, everytime we turn the oven on it goes off and upsets our dog(she has addisons and can't deal with stress well.) So we tend to keep that one hidden under the couch LoL. But the other is right by my mamas room, a pin dropping on teh other side of the house could wake her up lol. |

We live about 2 miles away from a fire department. They went to homes in the area recently and put in smoke detectors for free. They put one in upstairs at our house and one downstairs. (we already had one that was a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector, but they wanted to go on and add the other two) |

Something I've never really thought about except for when I cook...and very badly at that it will go off then, I mean the alarm goes off when I cook bad food it's as if knows or something. Mom said there are 2 or 3 here, but I don't know where they are. Great post |
