Undefeated Smarty Jones wins Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE — Smarty Jones remained undefeated winning the Kentucky Derby Saturday in the slop at Churchill Downs.
He went off as the favorite and became the first horse since Seattle Slew in 1977 to stay undefeated. Smarty Jones is now 7-0.
It was the first Derby for jockey Stewart Elliott and trainer John Servis.
Lion Heart, who set the early pace, finished second. Imperialism finished third.
Smarty Jones paid $10.20, $6.20 and $4.80. Lion Heart paid $8.20 and $5.80. Imperialism paid $6.20.
Smarty Jones, owned by first-time Derby participants Roy and Patricia Chapman, was bred in Pennsylvania at Someday Farm.
