What Makes YOUR State SPECIAL?? ...:)(:SpaceCase

Today I decided to take my kiddos on a Sunday drive. Chucking maps and directions in the wind, I trusted my inner compass to guide us on a marvelous adventure through some of Texas' glorious Hill Country. I knew where I wanted to end up, but didn't care how we got there.

Destination: Marble Falls/Buchanan Dam

Along the way, we enjoyed the spectacular flowers that trailed endlessly on either side of the Farm-to-Market roads I traveled. There were just tons of goldenrod colored cowslips, lemon yellow primroses, brilliant plum-colored winecups, silvery lavender foxgloves, rusty colored paintwheels, and then the very "Texan" bluebonnets and deep orange indian paintbrushes. Also along the way were blooming cacti growing out of the rock walls that lined part of the way, the odd antelope flowers (can't remember exact name from Biology 11 years ago, LOL), and other flowers I don't even know the names of. Fields of purple bridal wreaths were breathtaking.

We went through the rolling hills into the granite shoals, awestruck by the simple beauty that made rocky cliffs look like artistic statues. We actually drove for over an hour and a half without seeing one gas station or Walmart, LOL...Nothing, just God's beautiful landscape for miles and miles, with places for goats and sheep to play, and cows and horses to graze, and old, rusty, broken down tractors to retire for good.

Only mile after mile of ranch land, each rancher marking his entrance with a hint of his personality. From palacial entrances created from stark white limestones, to the more humble approach, cedar and barbed wire. Most of the ranches were also named, like The Rockin' R Ranch, or Honeymooner Hideaway, decorated more often than not with a nice big lone star in the center of their fancy, artistic welded proclamations.

When we finally made it back into crowded civilazation, we were first greeted by the ghost buildings of an older time and a really cool train depot, revamped for riders of the Hill Country Flyer. We were getting closer, I was in familiar territory and so many wonderful memories of my high school days came flashing back. This area was a hop, skip, and a jump away from the town I graduated from and I often ventured out either with family or friends, to create these special memories that resurfaced today. (: How nice :)

I was so tempted to trail off of my original path and check out a few of my old hang-outs, because in 10 years, so much had changed, but I promised my kids a nice, big lake, so there was no turning right to Longhorn Caverns and Inks Lake, or to dip our toes out in the shallow pools along the granite shoals.

The boys enjoyed seeing a private airport, with all their planes, but also displaying retired Army tanks and airplanes from WWII. We also got to check out a petting zoo along the way, which had 3 buffalo, a zebra, a camel, goats, geese, and some chickens. And when we finally arrived in Marble Falls and found the beautiful Perdinales River, my heart soared, as I watched my children enjoy the riverside and rolling down the massive hill of soft green grass, giggling gleefully all the while.

On my way back, I found a few short cuts, making my trip over an hour and half shorter than the over two hours we took getting there. In Texas, there are so many ways to get to and from places without having to deal with traffic, stop lights, and the kids screaming for a McDonald's Happy meal, every 10 minutes, you just have to venture off the beaten path. If you do, you will be amazed at the glorious beauty of the rolling hills and all of Mother Nature's splendor.

They call Texas 'God's country'...and it's true that He took extra care in the creation of this neck of the woods.

I want to know what makes your state special....or country...hehe

***By the way, the first song on the radio was a country song about the singer wanting a simple life...and after today, I love my simple life even more***

We've got Hot Srings, forrests, mountains, secret rivers, and a whole lot more. In northern Arkansas and down in Hot Springs are the perfect retiring spots! lol. That's about as interesting as this state gets. :P

Date: 4/25/2004 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    Well, see, I live in Michigan. The best part is, it looks like a hand. So if you want to give directions, make a shape like Michigan and point. Easy. Other then that... Um... we have an upper peninsula. The UP (it spells up, cool huh?) And... crap, Michigan sucks. lol -
Date: 4/25/2004 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    Well I live in Texas too; it's special because it's the only state to have so much state pride. In most of the schools you learn the state pledge, the state songs, the state bird, Texas history ect. You can buy Texas shaped tortilla chips, cookie cutters, clocks, earings, coasters, picture frames, and all kinds of other stuff. I always see a lot of people here wear Texas flag clothing also. When my friends come from other states they always say Texans have more pride then people from other states LOL.

Date: 4/25/2004 4:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 1799    you know, according to Ron White, this is what's special about Texas: "we have the death penalty, and WE USE IT. Other states are trying to oblish it, my state is putting in an express lane." just thought i'd add the comedy in there.
Date: 4/25/2004 4:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    Alien, is it true that I can go somewhere in Texas and scream "The stars at night are big and bright" and everyone would else would join and sing "Deep in the heart of Texas"? -
Date: 4/25/2004 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    smooth Criminal... having a Map of Michigan at the end of your arm is pretty "handy", huh? LOL That's my favorite part of living here, too. Sad, isn't it?

Date: 4/25/2004 5:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 12133    I'm originally from Michigan also. Date: 4/25/2004 7:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Well Tennessee is a pretty state. I never realized that until I did some traveling, and then came back home. I like it here. Its home.. Of course we have Nashville, country music capital (I don't really care for country music though), we have Smoky Mountains. Hmm I'm thinking... the only drawback here is it gets so boring! But I live in a very rural area and its 12 miles to the nearest town (and even that town is pretty small). But its home and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Wait.. thats a lie. I would trade it for a house on the beach!!
Date: 4/25/2004 7:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 13283    Texas is special coz its a mighty state . It would do well as its own country as a matter of fact . This year it will be home to the World Thoroughbred Championships . We have the reigning NBA champions and we also have the reigning College World series champs . The Texas Rangers are currently in first place and all three of our basketball teams are in the playoffs . Our highways are so pretty with all the Bluebonnets blooming ! Razzy aka

Date: 4/25/2004 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 6867    I have not been replying to posts, but I couldn't resist when I read your post. First of all, I didn't get to go on a sunday drive the way I wanted to...but reading your colorful description of your day...I feel like I got out today I miss the hill country. Your description made me want to be there again. What I wanted to add about Texas is this: We have a ton of states rolled into one. We have 7 geographical regions...any one with any taste can make Texas their home. We have the wonderful Big Bend country...with beautiful mountains, wide open parks and the beautiful blue sky. Or, we have the plains in the panhandle, if you prefer wide open spaces, and fields upon fields of cotton. If water is your game, the praries and lakes region is the place to go and be laid back and enjoy lot's of trees and gorgeous lakes. If you wanna get completely down home we have the piney woods. Good fishing, and a little bit of swamp lifeIf the ocean is one of your loves...we have the gulf coast...home to some of the best beaches in the United States, plus we got NASA Then we have the south Texas plains region....filled with so much Mexican and German culture..just to name a few. You'll find the Mexican Market, the Alamo, the riverwalk, Seaworld and many other attractions in one of the South Plain's most popular cities...San Antonio. And of course we have SpaceCase's gorgeous hill country. Probably one of the most beautiful parts of Texas. Rolling hills, streams, rivers, and lakes...I have never been able to get enough of that part of Texas. Stacie I will definately be making a stop there, should I ever be traveling to the coast this summer Love you Ms. Stacie((hugs))

I will cross my fingers for a chance to meet you, my dear, dear friend *HUGS*

I had to say that..You know how I am..hehe..Anywaaaaay..Your trip sounds so wonderful. You absolutely described the country, wonderfully. I had a vivid mental image of you and the boys truckin' thru the hill country. You're a good momma...Since I'm on the coast, I'd have to say the sand, the sea, the bays and the marshes. At first glance, they may appear hostile, un-friendly areas, but when one takes the time to look, there is much beauty here also. Thanks for the excellant write-up, lady. Write on...
