I am not 40 yet, but my husband is over 40 and he says it is true. That as you get older yopu require less continual hours of sleep. Quick cap naps when you get to sit still for a bit is common too. |

OK, I am 72 and my sleep patterns did change over the years. After retiring, needed a nap in the afternoon. Now, I don't need one at all. Your body tells you what you need (I think) or maybe, at my age, I have forgotten. RAT |

LOL Rat..I wonder why...you'd think as we got older we'd require more sleep, but maybe we don't want to waste our remaining time sleeping??? |

Hiya Kelly!I'm 52 and can explain some of what is in store for the geriactrics here, while my memory is still partially intact. Before we reach 21 most of us are still growing.Growth occurs mainly during sleep. From 21 to appx.40,we are more physical in our lifestyles and in some cases at our jobs. When we burn energy thusly,we replace it during sleep. Now! We are 40ish and as we grow older,we learn to more work with less physical outpit. We use our brains instead of our brawn,so to speak.Less work means less energy spent that needs replacing.Less energy spent means, less sleep required.Oldsters sometimes find themselves sleeping only 4 hours a night to rejuvinate themselves. This only applies to those who are not using sleep aids,ie.pills.I have a friend who is 82 and does more work than most 21 year olds.He looks maybe 50 because of his inner drive that pushes him to stay active. He doesn't work harder than most...he just works smarter than most.He sleeps 4 to 5 hours a night.I hope this gives you some insight into what is in store for your golden years,my youthful friend.((hugz)) woodshed |

Yes, we do need less sleep as we get older, and I'm happy about that, because I'm always working on some project or another. There are times when I can stay up till 3 or 4 in the morning working, and I almost forget about going to bed. |

I don't sleep as much as I used to in my 20's but I thought it was because I was more depressed then. I still love sleeping and try to force myself out of bed before 9 but I used to like to sleep till noon, now I don't do that. I'm 41...IsisKat |

That's what my parents/grandparents have told me. I'm only 16 though, so I can't exactly give you a firsthand opinion. :-D |

I'm 46 and usually need 5-6 hours of sleep. This is more than I did in my 20's and 30's when I averaged 3-4 hours. |

yeah! well wait till you're my age hun, you need even less...sometimes I wish that I could sleep in till at least say 9am on a weekend but I cant, no matter what time I go to bed I start waking up round 5 or 6am, I was reading where they reckon we dont need as much sleep when we age as we are not as active, well, I have news for them, I would say that I'm much more active, exercise ways than when I was younger, my brain is going a hundred miles an hour and when I go to bed I think will sleep in...but ...no way...once the birds are up, so is ole Zeem....hugs |

Since I have been off work a year now and on all these meds, my sleep is way out of sync at 53. I can go to bed at 10, 11 or 12 and be up at 3:30 a.m. back down at 8 a.m., up till 1 p.m, back down till 4-5 p.m.. So, to say the least, I don't get anything done... Frustrating... |
