The term bootleg dates back at least to the days of moonshine, which was called bootleg whiskey. This was whiskey, or shine, that was made in illegal stills to meet the demand for liquor during prohibition, and later to beat the revenue department out of taxes. The term today applies to music that is copied and sold illegaly to avoid paying royalties to the artist and music companies. |

A lot of the tapes and CDs you see in your out of the way convienance stores are bootleg. In years past, I have been known to buy one occasionly. Usually the quality was not as good as one done in a regular studio. With today's computer technology involved in music, the illegal copies are as good as the originals. By the same token, I have at times bought bootleg whiskey. The quality has normally been better. You have to know the quality of the still though, or you could end up dead. |

Bootleg is a homemade version of original. Usually has poor quality. Original's usually have a trademark of some kind. It's popular because it's cheaper. *hugs* |

my husband has a few bootleg movies. he bought them before they came out at the movies. in my opinion, the quality was so poor that the dvd's werent worth 15 dollars each. i dont think its right, so i dont involve myself with that. i think he got what he deserved by getting crappy copies lol |

Everyone else pretty much explained it, but I do own some bootleg software and a whole bunch of bootleg songs. Mostly of Danzig and Misfit's concerts. |

My definiteion might be a bit off, but I've always known bootlegs to be something that has never been released/available to the public. I know cause I own quite a few Beatles bootlegs (I didn't buy them...it was a trade lol) |
