Racial discrimination, or not?

  Author:  48812  Category:(Discussion) Created:(3/3/2004 6:58:00 PM)

Okay, now, I hope I don't convey the wrong message here, but I just need to get this off my chest. Why is it that, when you're around people of a different race (now, i'm not saying EVERYONE in a specific race), you have to be careful about what you say, what you do, or else you get classified as a racist? For example, there's this one black girl in I know who doesn't like my friends. I have to be EXTREMELY careful around her, or else she might call me racist and begin slandering. This same girl, in the beginning of the school year, was looked at the wrong way and began telling the vice principal that she was a victim, was being told that "black people don't deserve to go to a white school" and lots of other stuff like that--when the person who supposedly said that would NEVER make such remarks. My dad was just accused of race discrimination when he refused to represent someone that had no case that needed to be tried. This person filed a formal report, saying that my dad isn't doing his job, and that he's racially inclined, and won't represent a man that isn't white. This isn't true; my dad is one of the fairest people i've ever met, he doesn't put stock into the color of your skin or where you're from. I'm not racist, either; some of my good friends are black. But it's not just the black people, either; some of the Mexicans i go to school with do the same thing; you're walking on eggshells around them all the time, and you have to analyze everything you say or else you'll be called a racist. Could i please get an idea of WHY this happens? I'm sick of it, and yet, i can't do anything. If i try talking to them, either they'll deny everything or try to pick a fight, and I know from experience that both responses won't get me anywhere. So...what's the deal, really?

Date: 3/3/2004 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 60992    I'm very lucky. Most schools in B.C.(British Columbia) are very multi cultural. You don't have to be careful what you say but if you do make racist comments you can be sure you won't have any friends. It's not put up with. It's different in other provinces or and countries. I know I said flip on here and sumone said it was racist. But I've been hanging out with filipino for 6 years THEY say flip too all flipino's do atleast they do here and it's never been racist. It's different in other places.

Date: 3/3/2004 8:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 60052    This may be hard for you to understand, but being a multi-racial person myself, I understand the way they feel. After being discriminated against all of your life, and all of your ancestors having been discriminated against in the same way and worse, it becomes a learned reflex to take what a caucasian person says as an insult or slander, even if there was none intended. So, why can black people call each other the 'N' word and white people can't call them that? They use it to drain the power from it, but whites can't use it, because it was white people that made that word bad. -- It may help to think about it this way, if you hit a dog with a newspaper every day, any time the dog sees a newspaper, he will be scared. The same goes for people. If they are abused, they will continue to fear their abusers, even if the danger is no longer present.
Date: 3/3/2004 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 6867    i'd have to agree w/To Die For's comment. It's an automatic reaction. I know that is what it was in my case. And it's vey hard to stop doing it. It's not you....I don't know what to say, it is very hard to explain. I'm sure there will be some caucasion person around here that thinks they know the answer. So, before they speak I will say it beforehand....until you walk a mile in my shoes, don't assume you know.....What I had to do was just start giving caucasions a chance...I have been hurt alot by white ppl, and I am guessing it's because of where I live...there are quite a few racists here...I had to make my self become a more open person and stop looking for a white person to say something to make me mad. I'm a happier person now, and haha, my bf is even white. So, all I can say is, don't walk on eggshells for anyone...you know you are not a racist and you would never say anything to purposely hurt someone of another race...it must be miserable having to analyze everything you say, just stop doing it. Date: 3/3/2004 11:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    "I'm white and proud to be white"- You are a racist "I'm black and proud to be black"- You're part of a movement for equality. ....That's the way society in America thinks. I will not apologize for being proud of what I am. I'm not afraid to say it. Kick those eggshells out of your way and just be yourself.
Date: 3/4/2004 8:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 58611    stop worrying about it sweety, you know you arent a racist, you are respectful of what you say around the others, if they cant figure that out about you then that is there own problem.
Date: 3/4/2004 8:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I was at a movie theater a while back where a huge crowd of teenagers who happened to be black were acting up, yelling and throwing popcorn during the movie, the managers couldnt stop them...a young white woman leaned over to one of the teenagers and said very nicely, would you people please be quiet, you are ruining the movie for everyone...the outrage from these kids was hilarious..."what do you mean, You people" they shouted. The "outraged" young punks ran this woman and her boyfriend out of the theater and than began calling each other the "n" word in celebration. I got my money back and the young brats went home I'm sure quiet satisfied that they had confronted "racism" head on.
