My mother attended a funeral on Saturday. The church was full. It was a true celebration of an extraordinary life. Elizabeth was 1 month away from her 91st birthday when she left this life. She knew of her impending death days in advance so planned her own memorial service and said goodbye to her loved ones.
I met Elizabeth nearly 20 years ago, she was losing her sight at that time. We belonged to the same book group. While the rest of us read books taken New York Times Best Seller list, she read Misty of Chicoteague and other childrens books, as she learned brail. Elizabeth was a retired teacher. She continued to teach long after her retirement.
Elizabeth touched not only individuals but an entire town. She never stopped. She walked everywhere with her white cane. She attended concerts and plays. For her birthday celebration one year, she brought in a singing group all the way from Germany that gave a free concert for the community.
My home town has lost an irreplacable person. Those of us left bear the mark of her grace and courage. It gives us all a high mark to live up to. How it changed my life:She was the epitome of a Christian lady, role model and mentor.
