maybe people who are skitzophrenic are actually gifted, and have just managed to tap into the "other side"....maybe we "normal people" are the ones that are crazy...hmmm.. |

One would have to be assessed; here in the US, the Diagnostis & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM-IV-TR ) is used to assess the symptons/signs and determine both the nature and, if possible, the specificity of the mental disorder. |

Believe me, you'll know. My aunt was schizophrenic. She would see things, other than people that weren't there. She would see the telephone poles falling down on her. She would go out of her house completely naked. Sometimes she would go out and wash her driveway. Along with some very odd things I won't mention as well. Anyway, you can just tell. People with schizophrenia are very out of touch with reality, and there's a lot more to it than just seeing/talking to people that aren't there. |

My grandmother was schizophrenic and I honestly believe that up until the day she died she never knew she had it. She thought the people on the news were talking to her and got upset one day when the television said stay where you are just before a commercial break and she had to go to the toilet! |

i think it could be possible. my son has, for the past few years, talked to people who aren't there. he has "charlie" who he met at the bottom of the pool when his floatie boat tipped over. charlie has been around for about 4 years now. but every so often he will see and hear things that nobody else does. he'll cover his ears and say "mommy, make them stop! i can;t understand them!" he sees a psychiatrist for other reasons and i mentioned this one day and the first thing the doctor said was "it might be schitzophrenia". whatever my son says he sees, he does see. the doctor has established that much. but i also noticed when my sister lived with me, she had a ouija board. i didn't know it, but she did. my son started acting really weird one day. growling, twitching, biting etc. i found out that the day before she had used the board in our house. it was gone after that and he was better. the doctor was so quick to mention a mental disorder, but i believe there may be something else going on. it's a very good point you raised. |

Mental disorders have different characteristics. From the top of my head from doing psychology.. 1) How frequent is thos disorder 2) How normal are her/his actions in relation to society 3) is their behaviour desirable 4) Does it affect their day to day living 5)I can't remember the last one. Of course, this general checklist does have many criticisms. |
