The Digital Disease___Keeping Up With The Jones___~SpaceCase

When we only had a VCR, we were more prone to rent a movie than to buy one. However, since we purchased our first of two DVD/VCR combos, we have found it almost impossible to resist the urge to buy a DVD...at least once a week we give in to this strange power and now have a growing collection of average movies.

Sure, some of the movies we have bought have been worth it, but I feel it's almost become an obsession and it seems to be an epidemic that isn't soley our own. I have heard that DVD sells are actually in competition with actual box office ticket sales. It made me wonder what fuels the need for more mindless entertainment and question the powerful impact movies obviously have on the general population.

Is the average American's movie collection taking the place of more fulfilling endeavors? Maybe, maybe not. In my opinion, it isn't the best way to spend a buck and the sales are definitely not doing anything to better the country's staggering deficit. Maybe if they taxed movies differently, it would actually benifit the economy in a way that would warrent the seeming mania that exists these days over the ever-flowing new releases.

What are your thoughts on the movie industry, their marketing success, and it's effect on the lifestyles and economics of America??

Date: 3/2/2004 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I still buy VHS tapes, they sell for about 99 cents at Block Buster now. I may possibly be one of the few people to own and have watched all 4 Critters movies. I only own about 4 DVD's, and I probably won't buy that many more. Because most of the movies I like will never be put in DVD format.
Date: 3/2/2004 9:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    I know, there are many classics...well I consider them classics, that I would love to have on DVD, but the market is in over-drive spinning out new-releases, there's no way it could possible cover that much history...but never say never
Date: 3/2/2004 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    My fiance and I actually buy quite a few DVDs when we have the money to do so..we actually like them a lot more than the VHS tapes because the picture quality is great, no rewinding, just cut back to the beginning of a scene..lots of bonus features. I wouldn't say never about alot of classics showing up on DVD at some point..we just bout the Alien Quadrilogy (all 4 Alien movies with Sigourney Weaver) and each disc has two versions of the movie..the theatrical release and then a special edition in directors cut fashion. Plus there is a bonus disc for each movie with deleted scenes, and interviews and such. Who knows what else will come out or already has on DVD..you just have to keep looking.
Date: 3/2/2004 9:46:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    I've been looking for Forest Gump, and You've Got Mail but would love to have a DVD of A Philadelphia Story with in depth biographies on Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn and Carey Grant, teehee Thanks so much for commenting, Xylanthia
Date: 3/2/2004 10:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    I have been on a movie buying binge, and I think it is an addiction. Or, mindless entertainment, like you said. Or, boredom. We have too many toys. You are right about movies taking the place of more important things. But, it's fun in a way. You can look like a slob, lay down on the floor, and munch on. It's more of us doing something together, but are we really? We don't talk to each other during the movie. LOL.
Date: 3/2/2004 11:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 6867    This is a horrible obssession. I have purchased over 50 dvds and we have not watched one of them. they are still shrink wrapped. I think it should be considered an addiction, and there should be some sort of 12 step program or something. haha. i need to go to bed i'm tired and it's late, and that is definately the dumbest comment I have left all evening...*head is spinning* Love Yourself,
Date: 3/3/2004 6:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    ever since DVD players hit the shelves, ALOT of my friends have become purchasing additts ... i mean some of them have enough DVDs to start their own Blockbuster store! But before DVDs, very few of them would have owned more that one or two videos and even these would have been taped off the tv. i personally havent fallen victim to this, i still rent DVDs or often borrow off one of my friends. i have a couple but they've been given to me as gifts. there are only a few movies that i can watch more that once or twice and i guess if iam dying to watch them, i'll rent them!
Date: 3/3/2004 9:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 16115    I started buying DVDs when I was living in a dorm. I didn't have a TV, but my computer had a DVD player. It was the same thing with many of the other people on my floor. They would hear that I had movies, and they would come borrow them, and if they had some too I borrowed theirs. I met some of my friends like that. We bonded over our favorite movies. I don't live in the dorm anymore, but I haven't stopped my habit. I know that I could put my money to better use, but I can't seem to stop.
Date: 3/3/2004 10:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    so it IS an epidemic...and it's world wide! I want to cut down, but School of Rock just came out, and I'm eagerly awaiting The Return of the King.......aghhhhhhhhh help me, LOL
Date: 3/4/2004 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    Gia, and Space Case..I really am an addict..I have VHS movies that I haven't even opened! LOL.
