There are many many articles about this in the science journals and papers. The real real problem has come about because these children have just been assigned a gender and surgically turned into that gender, when perhaps they were mentally really more of the other sex. And to make it worse, many do not know it has even happened to them. BUT, it does show in the chromosomes, and so I really do think it would be a tremendous physical or mental handicap. I just found another article a few minutes ago. Thanks for stopping by! LOve and Light |

Intersexed people do not have any special rights or privileges, and in fact are raised as either one or the other sex from shortly after birth. In years past, surgery was done shortly after birth, but recent studies are calling for a delay in surgery until such time as either a male or female attitude shows dominance. |

Unfortuantly Two Spirit you can get problems with that, for example there was a young boy who was born an intersexual in Australia. His Parents refused to believe it and simply raised him as a girl because he also had a twin brother. They figured they had the best of both worlds. This was until he found out at age 10 what the score really was. This made for a totally confused individual. |

Two Spirits, intersexual people have not been given any "public" special benefits that I know of, even though I feel they definitely are due some as that is surely a handicapp of sorts, because they have not chosen to push their sex life and sexual prefences up everyone'e nose! Love and Light |

Kurtvedder, the problem has been in the past that when the parents or doctor decides which way to do the surgery, it has been often times wrong. By waiting until an older age to do surgery, at least the family and doctors know which sex is the predominant and correct sex. Until that time, the family has to raise the child one way or another, and hope they are right. If the surgery is done after birth and is worng, the problems are even greater down the line. |

Lightworker, the number of intersexed people in this world is far fewer than those of us who are transsexual. They do not push their life on others for the same reason we do not, it is our life and our business. It is hard enough for those of us who are transsexual. It is even harder for those who are intersexed. |

I'm sorry but doing it later causes more confusion and problems for the child. Once they are old enough to start thinking it is going to be very difficult for them. |

Kurtvedder, the transsexual group I worked with also worked with intersexed people. Medical research has found it is far better to wait. In the past, it is estimated that over half eh surgeries done after birth were of the wrong sex, creating even greater problems as the person got older, and even causing suicidal tendacies. I have copies of some of that research, including at least one video documentary on it. I would suggest you look at the latest research on the subject. |

But the fact of the matter is this. These kids shouldn't have the choice of how they are raised. A decision should be made earlier than they are being made. |

Two Spirits, I feel there is a difference between transsexual and homosexual. Love and Light |

Kurtvedder, understand something, in the research that was done, over half, and closer to 75% of the early surgeries on people known to have been intersexed was found later to be to the worng gender. Some of those people had attempted suicide, and others were having problems so severe that they could not live a normal life. The only option was to have a second surgery, which could only be done after extensive counseling and hormonal therapy. Being transsexual, I know part of what those people went through. Much of it is the same thing I have to go through. While you may think it best to do the surgery early, the fact is that the body does not get the full hormonal effect until puberty. That is when the doctors can know for sure if the child is truly more male or female. |

Lightworker, many of the problems faced by homosexuals are also faced by transsexuals. The marriage issue actually could have a greater impact on us than it does on homosexual, since we could be left with no one that we can legally marry if the FMA goes through. |

From what I have seen on this issue, I do agree with Two Spirits. The documentary I watched recently showed people in Central America where no surgery was performed. These children were allowed to grow into whatever genitilia their bodies did actually have. Their mental and emotional disposition appeared a lot more positive than the American people who have had surgeries right after birth and assigned a sex they "really" weren't. God Bless. |

I realize that, Two Spirits! And that is why I said that transsexual is different than homosexual. This is not just about sexuality, this is about physical aspects, hosmonal aspects and all aspects of a persons life, and special consideration should be given them. Thank you for replying! everybody, both men and women have the female chromosome. The X chromosome is the female chromosome, A female is XX Male is XY and the 'intersexual' you are speaking of has the sexual chromosome arrangement of XXY (AKA Hermphrodite). Just wanted to give the explanation some scientific clarity. It is a rare mutation so there wouldn't be an awful lot about. By the way, why should people need a 'special' right to marry? Why isn't everyone allowed equal rights? You marry who you wish so should everybody else. love, |

hmmm...marriage. I never thought of how one would label the sex on this kind of case. I do believe that this child that is born with this specialness, should be given the right to chose or just wait and see. i think that after a few years and without the child even knowing, you can perhaps tell what sex the child is favoring. couldnt you give the child a unisex name and perhaps not sterotype the gender roles??? also, do some of the genatalia (sp) grow more profound??? hmmm, interesting topic. wish this was a newer debate and had more responses. this is very interesting. |
