Date: 3/2/2004 7:36:00 AM From Authorid: 45397 aww Kiki sorry to hear about your problem. I have a friend whose son is ADHD and she never put him on the pills, all she gave him was coffee and it seemed to help calm him down. Your son is a straight A student in school and that is a great accomplishment to do with having ADHD and you must be pretty proud of that. Try herb meds they may take a little longer to work but there is no side effects to them, not sure if they have anything for ADHD but could always check it out. |

Date: 3/2/2004 7:38:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15157 The only reason we put him on strattera was it was non-narcodic..but they are saying it is not working at school...although at home he is just fine. We tried that coffee thing...maybe I should do it again |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:39:00 AM From Authorid: 53427 If you are having major problems with him at school, maybe you should consider pulling him out and homeschooling him. I am homeschooling my son because of medical problems and its not nearly as hard as I would have thought. |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:40:00 AM From Authorid: 19869 can the school not supply a helper in the class to help him? |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:42:00 AM From Authorid: 15777 Oh Kiki's I know nothing about that at all. I'm so sorry to hear that though. I would do a search in your area to see what you can come up with. Wish I had something better to say. My niece has the same thing. She takes some kids of med's but this just started not to long ago so I don't know much about it...Oh kiki's again I'm sorry and you wknow we are all here for you *hugs* |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:44:00 AM From Authorid: 11097 (((hugs Kiki))) my little brother is having a lot of problems at school also, he was diagnosed with autism when he was around 3-4 years old. He is doing so wonderful now, I would even call it a miracle, but there are still somethings that need working out. He isnt doing very well in school because he has a hard time learning so my stepmother is fighting for him to be put into a special class where he has more individual attention. She is also trying to get a nice summer program for him, because last summer it was terrible. His other situation is that he is picked on a lot, people are very mean to him. They hit him, call him terrible names, threaten him...all kinds of things. So we are having a lot of trouble over here...but the best thing one can do is be there, hang in there through it all, and support them always- and I know you do all of this and so much more. Hang in there, good is coming your way. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son, God Bless Always, much love |

Kiki have you tried checking into other schools perhaps? I know some schools provide extra helps for kids with adhd. My nephew had ADHD. And hes 17 now. He struggled for awhile but hes doing awesome now. And he is a wonderful kid. Just provide lots of love and kisses. If you ever need to talk I am here. Robin |
Date: 3/2/2004 8:28:00 AM From Authorid: 22370 *hugs* Kit Kat..Let me point out that I would first take him to an Army or military doctor. Why? Because regular doctors won't get paid unless your kid walks out that office door with SOMETHING. Military doctors get paid regardless. Try to also look at the schools atmosphere. Why did they want to diagnose him with ADHD? In some cases, teachers are very impatient and will say anything to get that child calm. I hope everything goes ok *hugs* |
Date: 3/2/2004 9:13:00 AM From Authorid: 41708 I want you to do something for me and yourself: Pick him up from school right after a scheduled dosage is given out and take him to lunch or something. See the way he acts on the drug. See if it's a waste of money or if it's making he act in a way you don't like. I can't speak for this drugs effects, but I was on Ritalin for a while and boom! Instant zombie. Also... just a side note, does this drug mess with heart rate? If so, get him out of PE. Nearly killed me trying to keep up. |

Well I'm in tenth grade and I have ADD. Ive been diagnosed with it since I was in Elementary School. If he's an A student then it seems you have nothing to worry about. Oh, and none of the med's really work for me. I tried the stratera thing too. I just gave up on the meds. I hate em. What the school can do for your son (if he needs it) is allow him extra time to finnish tests and stuff like that. But I think your worrying about it more than you need too. Its not that bad. And its not permanent eithar, my friend had ADD and like two years ago it just disapeared suddently. If it does become a big problem for his school work you will need to work with him on ways to stay organized with what work he needs to do and make sure he finds the time to focus on it and by limiting the distractions around him. -SirThomas (Pheonix 3270) |

You would be surpised, kids do adjust really well when they are young, how old is he? Maybe you can contact school and work something out. I don't myself have alot of faith in our public schools, Although I hear many postive things about public schools out of the state I am in.. California doesn't have the best schools systems so I am kinda going by just what I know here. I have also heard you can help ADHD with foods. Thats what my sister in law said doctor told her. But she said it was to much work for her to see he ate specific foods. /rolls eyes. So she put him on meds. which caused him to get really thin and not eat. And not grow.. He's fine now and off meds and eating non stop. I think hes catching up now.. Hugs to ya Robin |

Date: 3/2/2004 3:37:00 PM From Authorid: 30421 If your child isn't having problems at home then it is POSSIBLE that there is other problems at school that he is having...Kids with ADD/ADHD have inattention and hyperactivity NO MATTER what setting you put them, so if you don't see it at home I would be looking at some other potential problems....Did he have straight A's before the diagnosis?? There is other drugs besides Strattera....They are psychostimulants BUT the have reverse effects on kids with ADD/ADHD, and b/c they are stimulants it is possible to take him off of them like on the weekends or on holidays......A few of these drugs are Ritalin, Zylert, and dexadrin to name a few. BUT like I said if you don't see a problem at home, then it could be another problem....I would see about getting him an occupational therapist.....and also DIET!!! There is some kids when you put them on a strict diet they improve tremendously and don't need the meds anymore.....I could go on and on..if you would like more info send me a message! Good Luck... |
Date: 3/2/2004 4:11:00 PM From Authorid: 62367 Please do your research on this Kiki. Research drugs and treatments. What exactly is he doing in school that needs this change to stronger medication? How does he get along with his teacher or his fellow students? I would go to school with him just to check all these things out. Best of luck and my prayers go with you. |
