Hon, it's hard but you DID help him the meds may not have worked, and he was hurting. My family had to put down my ten year old dog recently and it hurt like crazy, but it's the best thing. This poem brought me comfort when Treasure passed away and I hope it helps you. Rainbow Bridge this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown... |
Date: 3/2/2004 5:11:00 AM From Authorid: 22370 Aww Hon, *hugs*..you did the best thing. He was suffering very bad. I remember when I was a kid, my cat had a litter of kittens, and the runt was born very sick and had maggots crawling all over it, so we called the vet and they told us the best thing was to put it out of it's misery. So my best friend and I wrapped it up in a old cloth and put it in a plastic bag. We watch him die and then we had a cute little funeral for him. *hugs* They both are in better places now. |

Date: 3/2/2004 5:19:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62310 Thank you apprirition. The doctor asked if I wanted to be in the room when they euthanized him and I just couldn't. I feel so bad that he died with a stranger but I know it probably would've haunted me for the rest of my life if I saw what they did to him. |
Date: 3/2/2004 5:21:00 AM From Authorid: 15228 I'm so sorry. Don't feel guilty, you did the best you could for him and since his kidneys were probably damaged it was just a matter of time. I put my dog to sleep last may after spending 800.00. At first I felt a little guilty for not spending more, but there is never a guarentee that medical care is going to work. So put the guilt away and remember your friend.. you did the best you could and I think you made the right decision. |
Date: 3/2/2004 5:24:00 AM From Authorid: 15228 I just saw your last comment...one of my biggest regrets is being in the room with my dog when he was put down....I would never do that again... |

Date: 3/2/2004 7:01:00 AM From Authorid: 15157 Aw so sorry hunny...I remember when a cat we named Yaddy got into some of the dogs meds...Late at night we heard a huge thump and we got up to find her lieing in the front room twitching uncontrollably...I grabbed her up and took her to the emergency animal hospital with my daughter and the whole family basically...We finally had to put her down because she was suffering so...we all were crying in that waiting room ...we took it very hard and now we have a new Yaddy and her brother named Tom....we keep close eyes on them..never letting them out of the house. They have a cat tree in the bathroom and basically have the run of the house lol |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:21:00 AM From Authorid: 48809 Author, it always hurts so bad to lose the little pets we love. Please don't blame yourself because you could not afford the ridiculous prices that the Vet was charging. It is not your fault because if they were not so greedy, I am sure you would have had him treated. So you see... you did do the best you could! If Vets charge beyond our ability to pay for their services... then it is their fault that we have to let our pets go...not ours! Just remember that your pet knows what happened and he does NOT blame you in the least. I hope that you know your kitty is well once again and is just fine. I have had my pets come back to me after they have passed over and we were so happy to see each other. I hope you will see yours too because he is still very much alive! |
Date: 3/2/2004 7:54:00 AM From Authorid: 62181 Sometimes the hardest things are the best things. You did an unselfish thing and I know it's not easy. I feel your sorrow. I'm sorry. Peace |

Blessings. I know what you are feeling. I had this happen to me in June. It was terrible. I knew what was coming and had to make this decision. Time will help. But I know the loss of a pet dog, cat, or whatever is terrible. |
Date: 3/2/2004 10:02:00 AM From Authorid: 10344 Don't beat yourself up over it...you did what you could. Like the doc said....treating him might not have even worked. I think you did the right thing. Sometimes it seems like it's not even worth having pets because you know someday they will pass on, and it really can be so painful. But everytime I go on and get a new pet...lol. Then when you have that time you need to heal,...you can actually look back and enjoy the memories you have of your pet. Hope you feel better soon. |

Date: 3/2/2004 10:18:00 AM ( Admin ) I really don't like many VET's. Many of them (not all) know how you feel about your companions and take advantage of that, just like the mortuary business. Vet's can milk people out of thousands of dollars in a matter of weeks trying to save a loved one, knowing full well that there is nothing they can do, and without telling you that. Please don't feel guilty about your decision. For me, I wish they had the same choice if I were in pain and misery. Forget the guilt, remember the love. Make the rest of your life of memories with your companion good ones. |
Date: 3/2/2004 10:19:00 AM From Authorid: 37449 Aww Im so sorry. Im looking at my cat now and I cant even to imagine having to do that. My Friends cat died (was put down) and she took everything that reminded her of him, or things he owned (ie collar, toy) and she put it in a box, taped the box up and put Sammie on the box (Sammie was the name of her cat) Now every time she feels like crying, or wants to enjoy memories she opens the box up. And now there is really nothing day to day in her house that reminds her of him (its all int he bix) so she doesnt cry. |

Date: 3/2/2004 12:00:00 PM From Authorid: 13283 What Radman says is true . You did the right thing . One time a vet told me I had to either spend a couple of thousand to save my dog OR have him put him to sleep . She was lieing and making me miserable . She acted like I ONLY had 2 options . I came up with a third option . I asked her to give him an antibiotic shot and I told her I would take him home to heal . My dog lasted me 6 more years and then I let him die naturally . This was last year . This year I had to put down my 15 year old chow . Its tough, its heart wrenching , its taxing . Just realize your cat no longer feels the pain and now your cat has wings ! Your cat is with you ( you just cant see it ) , that is all your cat knows (you ) . Razzy aka |

Date: 3/2/2004 4:17:00 PM From Authorid: 62367 I know you are hurting now but you did the best thing for your furbaby. Cats with kidney problems are very hard to care for and usually don't last long. One of my cat's was 2 when he was diagnosed with severe kidney damage. I tried to prolong his life with special food and saline solution given under the skin twice daily. He survived only 4 months. I learned my lesson never again. You did the right thing. You will see your companion again. |

Date: 3/3/2004 6:51:00 PM From Authorid: 55903 I had a cat that had been born in my backyard when I was 19 years old. I raised her from a kitten. I loved her so much. She lived with me for 17 years. She grew very weak like your cat did. She couldn't stand. I had to hand feed her and clean her up constsntly. After a couple of days when I saw she was not getting better, I took her to a vet. He said she had a bad heart. Her kidneys had also been affected. And she had gone blind and deaf. He said he could give me meds that might help, but it would only prolong the inevitable. I held her in my arms while he gave her the shot that would end her suffering. I will always miss her. But I have never regretted the decision I made that day. Remember always the good times you had with your cat. And know that you did do the right thing. He trusted you to care for him. But caring for a beloved pet also means knowing when to let go. ~~ |
