Merlin -Running Wolf-

A long, long time ago
In the valley of mysteriousness and mist
Lived the queen of all faeries
Who pressed the old ways with her fist
Queen Mab was her name
An egotistical pixie
Whose goal in life was fame

One year that had far surpassed the rest
A little boy was born
And placed upon his lifeless mother’s breast
Little Merlin
A product of all that was old
Half magic half mortal
He’d make a great wizard, or so he was told
He lived in the woods
With Auntie Ambrosia by his side
For his youth he was loved
Until his Auntie’s life ran away with the tide

Taken back to Mab’s lair
Merlin was to be taught the old ways of magic
Talent he possessed, but the desire was bare
Merlin left that place
To pursue his own quest
The last of the wizards
He was sure to be the best
His journey took him near and far
Looking for a just and fair king
And nothing sub-par

Along the way
He met his love
Lady Nimawae
Perhaps sent from above
Scarred by a dragon
One of Queen Mab’s evil tricks
Nimawae went into hiding
Reflections produced only by the light of candlewicks

Requesting help from the Lady of the Lake
Merlin could not judge character
He could not separate the real from the fake
He was given the mighty Excalibur
Which was placed into a stone
The one who could pull it
Was the man that deserved the throne
Young Arthur rode up to the rock one day
Confidence he lacked
But he tried anyway
The sword came out
To the joy of the town
Arthur was now king
And he’d be world renown

King Arthur became
A hero himself
Many precious treasures
Was his source of wealth
Many a battle was fought during his reign
The largest with Queen Guinevere
Who caused him great pain
Betrayed by his wife
And his most trusted knight
King Arthur left for one last fight
With his inbred son, and his mortal enemy
This young son posed a threat to his power
Yet Arthur would not flee
They fought to the death
But a winner there was not
Both father and son took their last breath

With the end of King Arthur
Merlin returned
To find his love Nimawae
And hope she wasn’t spurned
Deep in the forest
Among nature and the trees
Merlin found Nimawae
Sitting and swaying with the evening breeze
Two star-crossed lovers meet yet again
Now was the time to make amends
Both sweethearts were aged
And weathered with time
Merlin used the last of his magic
To return them to their prime

So ended the battle of old ways versus new
Queen Mab was forgotten
Disorder and chaos no long askew
Time went on
Merlin and Arthur ceased to exist
But those who believe
Can resurrect them
With a flick of the wrist
And with the turn of a page
These two heroes and their tales
Have improved with age
Never completely beyond
The other tales that are tall
We soon realize that
True magic resides
Within the souls of us all
