Maybe it's just a habit he's learned all along. Perhaps it's a comfort zone, to know that he has money and he doesn't want to end up with none. My dad has said the exact same thing so many times, so you're not alone. I think your family is stuck in a comfort zone that they don't know how to get out of. Maybe they just don't want to get out of it. I wouldn't call it selfish though. |

Nothing wrong with being shrewd with your money. Just because a person is tight doesn't mean they are necessarily selfish. Refer to silent existence's response. It's a good one. |

Oooooooook....here's my honest opinion here...and I side with both of you...I think your father really needs to prioritize...saving is important...BUT it's also important to see to it that your family is taken care of....Who cares if he buys off name vcrs...do they work?....looks aren't everything, if it works that's all that matters.....As for this apartment!? do you and your sibs just stay there?....I'm sorry but give me a break....I kinda feel that's an unecessary expense on everyones part. (But hey this is my opinion only).....I'm in COLLEGE....and I swing a 45 minute drive each way...and having been a senior in HS....I can tell you the work in college is alot harder...so I don't feel that with the facts you presented that an apartment is really valid.... |

Honey, don't be so hard on your dad. You don't know what financial problems he might be having. |
