I've been journaling since I was 7 years old, it was great therapy in the foster home that I was in at the time, and now it serves as a way to express creativity, and release emotion on a daily basis. I don't keep my journals. I find it theraputic to "release" the previous year's bad stuff by burning it in the fireplace. |

Good for you! Do you plan to transfer your handwritten ones? It is funny for me to go back and read about a guy I may have had a crush on only to find now, I can barely remember his face! lol! |

Oh! Wow! What a neat therapy during tough times. Please reconsider keeping them. Your children and grandchildren will gather strength from reading your experiences one day. I gave my mother a journal when she was diagnosed with cancer. It only has one half page entry in it, but I so treasure the words she wrote during her time of duress. I also love re-reading her cards and letters I have saved. They, too, become a journal. |

This is Very Nice.. I have been a Writer Since the Age of 9 and I have kept a Journal as Long.. I too feel it is Positive and we can go back and re read all the entries.. Believe me, there would be a great deal of reading if I were to go back and re read all I have written throughout the years, it makes me feel tired just thinking about it (lol), but I don't know what I would do with myself If I didn't keep a Journal.., I was thinking I would like to transfer some of my journals to computer as well, although I'm not sure when I would have the time. Hugs and Best Wishes... Great Post...T/C.... |

I've kept a handwritten for about 4 years now. It helps me get out a lot of stress and you're right, its good to look back on and see how you've changed since then. I love going back and reading my old entrys..sometimes I have to laugh at the childish things I use to write in them lol I think 'Wow, I said that!'. Yes, teachers do make students keep written journals! Especially in English..my teachers never graded them but they always commented. |

I have a journal on LiveJournal. I used to write in it everyday, now I just write whenever I feel the need. And I do think it helps, atleast for me it has. Since I have problems opening up to people, my journal has helped alot! Nice to get things off your chest. |

When I was 16 going on 17 I was married to a man who turned out to be a real jerk. He let his friends rape me and I left him after two months. I carried those experiences inside me for many years, including one time when it happened in a huge, old, hollowed out log. One day, many years later I went to a Writer's Workshop. One of the presenters did a class on writing and Shaminism and how one could take a journey through it and then write. So she would beat her drum to a certain pattern and we would all close our eyes and take a journey in our minds. When she was ready to stop, she would beat it really fast and then stop and then we were to write of the journey we had taken in our minds. In my journey I was able to come out of that log and walk into a beautiful sky blue clearing and finally be free of that darkening time of my life. I was over 40 then. That was the best therapy I have ever experienced. Each of us shared our writing and as I read mine, I teared and so did everyone else. She asked if she could share mine with future classes and I told her yes. If I can find it I will share it here. No matter how bad life gets you can "walk into the light". That's why Gloria Estefan's song, "coming out of the dark" means so much to me. |

I tried keeping a diary once as a child. I was lousy at it. No, I do not keep a journal about personal experiences. With a good memory, it never seemed necessary. Had too many other things to write. |

The war in Iraq officially started on March 19, 2003. I remember that date well as a friend and I were driving back from the cemetery where my son is buried on what would have been his 30th birthday and we heard it on the radio. Silence gripped the air... A journal moment for sure. |
