Hey USM! I have some sciene questions and I have NO idea what the answers are! If you could please try helping me out, I'd really appreciate it!

THANKS!

1.What does the mineral color of an igneous rock tell you about that rock?

2.Which rocks observed originated from volcanic activity? How do you know?

3.What caused the holes to form in some of the rock samples?

4.Why do some of the rocks have different densities?

5.What physical properties were identified in the rock samples?

6.Does a rock with large crystals cool slowly or quickly? How do you know?

7.What causes obsidian to look like glass?

8. Pumice released by volcanic activity will usually float. What physical property of pumice would allow it to float?

9. Why might it be hard to determine the density of a rock like pumice?

Date: 2/15/2004 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 22433    all these answers should be somewhere in the books. i dont think they'd give you the questions if the answer wasn't in the book
Date: 2/16/2004 6:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Per my hubby who has a degree in Geology.... #1)Igneous rocks can't be solely defined by color, although the darker the color the higher the iron content (more mafic).
#2) Volcanic rocks exhibit a variety of characteristics, some are glass (obsidian), some are pyroclastic (very porous and appear spongelike) and others (ie columnar basalt) are tubular in shape...volcanic rocks tend to exhibit SMALL crystalline structure, as they did not have a chance to cool and grow LARGER crystals...
#3) Depends on the type of rock...if they are sedimentary, then they likely were organic materials that dissolved and were filled in...for others, such as geodes, cavities are allowed to develop through air pockets and water...water plays a VERY significant role in the development of certain rock types...
#4) Different densities are explained by two fundamental principles...temperature and pressure...given that the chemical makeup of a rock sample is identical, there can be varying degrees of density based on the temperatures and pressures that a rock is exposed to...the BIG assumption is the chemical makeup...hematite is going to be much more dense than Calcium Feldspar just because Fe makes up hematite and is more dense than Ca ever thought of being!!
#6) Unknown..do not understand what this question is referring to?!?
#7) Hey...there you go...it's volcanic...it's expelled from a volcano at HIGH speeds and does not have time to cool slowly...because it cools at such a high speed, the crystalline structure is glass like...this has everything to do with rate of cooling!!
#8) Density? Pumice is very light and porous...so it's either the density (or lack thereof) or porosity...
#9) I'd have to do a little reading to give you the right answer...because it's so porous may make it difficult to determine it's true density...
Hope this helps...
