Friday night all the weathermen predicted that a good amount of snow and winter mix would move into the hill country around 1-4am Saturday morning. So of course I couldn't sleep and after stepping out of the tub at 1 am, much to my pleasure, the first of many snowflakes began their journey downward, covering trees, rooves, cars and the rolling hills that surround our home.
I went out and danced in the darkness, allowing the tiniest crystaline flakes to create a white veil over my hair and shoulders. I still could not sleep, so I sat in the window, watching as the earth became whiter and more visable in the darkness. I decided to lay six big bowls outside to catch clean snow and collected it until the last snowflake fell at 3am Saturday morning. Before finally hitting the hay, I gathered the collected snow into one bowl and put it in the freezer for an early morning treat for the boys.
And it was an early morning indeed, as our little ones anticipated the snow and woke up at 5:30am roaring and ready to enjoy the newfound miracle...I know many here feel differently, but as my seven year old, Sam, has never seen snow in his entire life, you can better understand just what a miracle it was to our excited bunch.
After they were bundled up, they ran outside and the first thing Sam did was make a snow angel. Then the war was on as snowballs went flying in every direction. This was my cue to drag my tired bones inside and whip up a batch of snow cream for the boys.
This consisted of a few teaspoons of vanilla, sugar and about 1/3 a can of condensed milk added to the snow I collected last night. It was actually very tasty and didn't taste much different than a bowl of Blue Bell's Homemade Vanilla. The ice cream was a wonderful compliment to the Valentine's cupcakes that were a part of their Sweet Valentine's Breakfast.
After that, we built a really goofy looking snowman with queen green olive eyes, a cherry nose, small pecans for his smile and larger pecans for his buttons. He wore a scarf and hat right up until he disappeared along with the rest of the snow at noon. But not to worry, I took lots of pictures of our kiddos enjoying the snow as well as wonderful shots of the frozen and frosted landscape.
How could Valentine's Day go wrong after such a splendid begining?? I don't believe it can...and it didn't at our house. Dinner was such a hit! I made two of the most tender and tasty T-bone steaks I have ever made or tasted...and made a Pineapple Outside In Cake (my own recipe) as well as Stuffed Mushrooms (my own secret recipe) that pleased my husband's tastebuds tremendously!
Oh and Al Green indeed worked his magic on us both making this the best Valentine's Day I've ever had!!
So, how was your Valentine's day spent?
