Jonathan Brandis.................B. Monkey

I am a strange one. Every year during the awards show season I look forward to the little tributes that are done commemorating each performer if they had died that year.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about that part of a show where they show a snippet of a frame of a person's career and the years that they lived.

Well this year Jonathan Brandis took his own life, he committed suicide. I've read that this act excludes him from the tribute reel. Do you think that it is fair that he not be included because of suicide? I think that he should be included, I don't think that by being included it will drive others to commit suicide and I think he deserves just as much recognition as anyone else.

Date: 2/8/2004 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    No because Marilyn Monroe is in tributes As have been several members of The Band and Badfinger
Date: 2/8/2004 6:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    What in God's name? By all means, include the man.. what are they.. pretending he didn't die just because he committed suicide? Well, suicide is a method of death, however controversial it may be.
Date: 2/8/2004 6:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 49739    I think he should be included. Just because he committed suicide does't make him bad or different. What about the people that pass away from drug overdoses, don't they include then in tribute reels? I think that drug overdose is a form of suicide.
Date: 2/8/2004 6:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    I hope they do decide to include him in, if they wanted to exclude people for stuff there are so many more things that they should pick on. Philandering and stuff like that.
Date: 2/8/2004 6:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Mrs. Strider I'm talking about the 5-10 minute film reel that they play during the awards show the year of their death.
Date: 2/8/2004 7:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    And Kurt Cobain is in the music ones
Date: 2/8/2004 7:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Mrs. Strider I'm just talking about 'year of'. He passed away in the past year, not for year to come. Just for inclusion in the awards shows of the year, which Brandis in particular will be the Academy Awards
Date: 2/8/2004 7:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 12862    I believe he should still get a tribute. I still can't believe he committed suicide. I use watch that show he was on all the time. He was a great actor.
Date: 2/8/2004 7:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    I didn't watch that Sassy Girl, but I really loved Stephen King's It and Ladybugs. I think if he had stuck it through a rough patch in his career he would of made it out alright.
Date: 2/8/2004 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 10344    I agree with you.
Date: 2/8/2004 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    I didn't know he killed himself. I don't think they should be excluded for something like that.
Date: 2/8/2004 10:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    Well, if Kurt kobain gets tributes then Jonathan Brandis should. But anyways I didnt know he committed suicide?? Thats such a bummer, he was such a huge crush of mine when I was younger.
Date: 2/8/2004 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    I agree with Rika.
Date: 2/9/2004 5:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Me too Apryl. Shai Beauty I admit it too, I thought he was cute when I was younger, especially around 'It' time. Dizzy Me I couldn't believe it either, I didn't know the guy personally or anything, but when there is someone around the same age bracket as you, I guess it makes it harder to believe. 27 is so young, there was so much more in store for him if he had only waited. I had read that he tried out for the Star Wars movies and was sad that he didn't get that (I think he went up for Anakin) and he had a part in a Bruce Willis movie and most of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.
Date: 2/9/2004 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 7830    He was a childhood star tragedy. What a shame. It's still surprising to me.
Date: 2/9/2004 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 62445    Actually it seems the Entertainment Indrusty can careless ; they barely said anything or done a tribute to JB.
Date: 2/9/2004 10:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 62445    It's really sad what he did,because I'll be 27 Feb.12. ~Charmlit
Date: 2/9/2004 2:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 31673    Are you sure that excludes him? When Brian Keith (the Dad in the original Parent Trap movie and the uncle in "Family Affair" committed suicide, he was still included in all the tributes. I think the rule is that they must be a current SAG or AFTRA member at the time of death. Was Jonathan Brandis a current member when he died? If so, he will likely be included.
Date: 2/9/2004 3:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 31673    Oh, and David Strickland from "Suddenly Susan." I know he was tributed at the Emmy's at least after he committed suicide.
Date: 2/9/2004 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    He deserved to be honored for his contributions as a child, and teen star. I do not believe that would have been condoning, or glorifying his suicide. I feel so sorry for him. Hollywood did not treat him well. Especially after he died, and became a footnote.
Date: 2/9/2004 7:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Charmlit I'm in the same boat as you. There is something very ominous (sp?) about the age of 27, I'll PM you about it later and put it on here or do a post...later.
Date: 2/9/2004 7:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Melodious I talked about it with Mrs. Strider over PM and my guess (she brought up Keith too) that it might have to with level of popularity. Keith was definately a bigger name and had done more in his career. They excluded him from the Golden Globes. I'm trying to tap into the memory bank here and remember if they did anything for Glenn Quinn and when he died (drug overdose) Glenn Quinn hasn't done much for movies, I mean I remember him in Dr. Giggles, he was more TV (the older sisters husband in Roseanne and eventually the show Angel). They didn't show Brandis during Globes and that is TV/Movies. He did Seaquest (TV) and he did movies (Ladybugs being the most recognizable)
Date: 2/9/2004 7:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Same here Spirit Child, maybe it's because I'm around the same age, but that's all it turned into basically, a footnote.
Date: 2/10/2004 5:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 26363    Well I didn't know he took his life but I do know many peeps who have and still have had tributes made to them. Why should he be any different? MorningGlory
Date: 2/10/2004 8:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 31673    BMonkey - yeah, I thought about that too. And that may very well be. Although, I often see people in those memorium things that I've never heard of. And there are behind the scenes people included too who people don't know. But you may be right, it may have something to do with thier body of work as a whole. I wonder if it's the number of credits they have or something? But I am surprised that Jonathan Brandeis wasn't included. He was a teen idol of sorts, so I would think they would honor him.
Date: 2/10/2004 10:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    I agree with you.
Date: 2/10/2004 5:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    You're totally right. He should have been included. Just because he took his own life doesn't make him any less of a person. He was a good actor.
Date: 2/10/2004 8:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 57232    Well he was excluded from Golden Globes, maybe they'll make the right decision and include him in the Oscar reel. We'll find out soon...
Date: 2/17/2004 2:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 17156    I think that he should be included do to his work "acting" not on what he did to himself after this career slowed down. Love and Hugs
Date: 2/29/2004 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 62334    Who can we write to complain ? Thats just wrong IMO. He should have been in it.

So sad :/
