Moments after her nightmare, Dawn was standing in front of her bathroom sink, splashing cold water onto her face. The nightmare was so real, so… intense. Looking at herself in the mirror, with the water dripping off her face in streams, Dawn thought back to her nightmare. In particular she thought about what her mother had said, ‘A Reverend is dead; BB is dead… pretty soon your going to be just like them… buried in the basement.’ “Buried in the basement,” she muttered to her reflection in the mirror.
Again she leaned down over the sink again, and splashed more cold water on her face. She rose back up, face to face with her reflection in the mirror, yet this time, a woman was standing behind her. Dawn screamed, and turned quickly. Yet no one was there once she turned. And although she only got a quick glance at this figure, Dawn just knew it was the same woman she saw earlier in the morning. Also, this time she could pick out some features. The woman she saw had straight blond hair, brown eyes, and a scare, which ran from ear to ear across her neck; she wore a white dress. Never in Dawn’s life had she had to deal with so much emotional stress. Her disbelief in the spirit world was seriously being challenged.
All of a sudden, she ran from the bathroom. Somehow she knew that there was something wrong with Brian; a premonition. She wasn’t sure what it was telling her that he was in trouble, but the feeling was just as intense as the nightmare. She bolted across the hall, gasping for a quick breath as she took hold of Brian’s bedroom doorknob. There was no hesitation in opening the door up, in fact, she threw it open ready for a fight. Whoever Jacob was didn’t concern her. Brian was her son, and she wasn’t going to lose him over her fear, and her unwillingness to deal with a stressful problem. At this point she was so tense, that even the supernatural didn’t scare her.
But ultimately, her feelings meant nothing. What she found in Brian’s room, thankfully, caused her to breath a deep sigh of relief. Her baby boy was asleep on his bed. For a moment, Dawn stood in the doorway of her son’s room, looking lovingly down upon him. Usually, a moment such as this would just be ordinary The trance she was in was broken with a KNOCK KNOCK on the front door. Quickly, yet gently, she closed her son’s bedroom door, and walked down the hall towards the living room.
As Brian lay in his bed, he dreamt: He dreamt that he was at the zoo with his grandma, which was funny because grandma Sophia had never taken Brian to the zoo. It was an overcast, gray day. They were standing outside of the monkey exhibit. Brian was holding a balloon – just as her mother had – and he was wearing the dirty old suit. The monkeys scared Brian, and he wanted to leave. He turned to his grandmother and said, “Grandma Sophia, can we leave?”
Unlike in Dawn’s dream, Sophia was staring at the monkeys with wicked distain. She looked down at her grandson, with her cold green eyes, and said in a hideously evil voice, “Look Brian, aren’t those monkey’s the most wonderful animals you ever saw.” This frightened Brian much more then the monkeys ever could. He started backing away from his grandma.
But then, out of the blue, his grandmother’s cold, dead green eyes changed into warm, caring, and beautiful brown eyes, and standing before Brian was a lady – the same lady Dawn had seen as a ghost. His grandmother had changed. Instantly, the gray clouds separated, giving way to a miraculously sunny, beautiful summer day. The lady was wearing a flowing, ankle length white dress, her blond hair glistened in the sunlight, and her smile was just as bright as the sun that shown down over them. Also, unlike what Dawn saw in her bathroom mirror, there was no slash mark across her neck.
Just as the sunlight gobbled up the clouds, Brian’s face brightened. “Mama! It’s you!” he cried out, happily.
The lady in white smiled, and said tenderly, “Yes… it’s your mama. I’ve missed you.”
Whereas Dawn’s dream had turned into a nightmare, Brian’s nightmare had turned into a dream. And as he slept, he smiled.
