Just want to warn you guys away from Net nanny.......... Kysta

I thought it would be a good idea. I was going crazy because of the stupid porn pop ups, that keep popping up when you least expect them. I swear I think they have a stupid thing embedded in them to resist popup blockers because they are determined to flash that junk on my computer screen. I hate porn. Anyway, I was particularly frustrated and downloaded Net Nanny three or four days ago. Spent my last fifty dollars, because I wanted the good package. BIG HUGE MISTAKE. It worked to block some websites, but when I tested it and typed in wierd addresses that sounded like porn sites, they came up PORN and all with no problem. Net nanny didn't block them. It also messed up my computer. I read all the help files, downloaded the patches, but I couldn't stay online for more than ten minutes and it slowed my DSL down to a crawl, it was like I had dial up. I've defragged and everything. It was even disabling my Mcaffee software. NOTHING worked until I decided that it could be that program so I uninstalled it and POOF..... my computer is back.

I had been working on it for THREE days. My husband made me quit earlier this morning, because I got the blue screen that you get when your computer freezes that says, "hit any key to continue" and I PUNCHED my keyboard, I was so frustrated. He thought I was going over board, but it said to "hit" any key, I was angry and hit a bunch. Sides, It didn't do anything but hurt my hand. Anyway, after I uninstalled the program my computer is fine now. I just wanted to warn anyone else before they wasted money on it.

I'm in the process of trying to get a refund now.

OH and if you want to call their support line, you have to have a credit card because they CHARGE you 19.95 for the call. Apparently they get so many calls with problems they had to start charging money to cover the refund expenses.

Just a warning,

Kysta

Date: 2/7/2004 1:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30986    I forgot to mention that Net nanny has a place where you can input your own sites to block. I put these sites that came up into it, hoping it would block them then, but Nope... they still came up and I know I did it right and typed them exactly.

Date: 2/7/2004 2:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30986    LOL@hey, hey paula. I was too ticked off to look for the "any" key, LMAO!
Date: 2/7/2004 2:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 6867    I had the same problems you were having but I never heard of "net nanny" I got lucky my first try looking fo an affordable antivirus and spyware removal program...it is called The Shield, and it is 29.99. It's an antivirus program, but also has a program that comes with it called Hackersmacker. And it works miracles. No more pop ups, especially porn site ones. It protects ALL of your personal information, It's not getting out unless you permit it. It will ask you when you get on the internet if certain connections are permited if you don't want it, block it, it's gone forever. You never have to enter anything manually, it figures everything for you except for your personal info. it will ask you to enter that once to enable the privacy protector feature. here is the link if you ever decide to take the plunge and get another pop up smacker/spyware detector....http://www.pcsecurityshield.com/sp/default.htm I really like it. Have a good day Love Yourself,
Date: 2/7/2004 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 33286    hmmm, you know, you may have some addware embedded on your puter, there are a couple things you could download to check for, and get rid of that. and if you use the right search engine after that you shouldn't have so many pop ups like that... first the search engine... I only use dogpile.com this is a meta engine that uses a dozen other engines or more, but it filters out all the porn sites, so go to www.dogpile.com and use it to look for these two addware sweepers... look up ad-aware6.0 and download that, and whatever that one doesn't pick up spy sweeper will, so look up spy sweeper and download that one too. both are free for home use. and the search engine is great.
Date: 2/7/2004 2:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    Thanks for posting this! Sorry about that. Hopefully you'll get a refund.
Date: 2/7/2004 2:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Maybe it's just me, I get pop-ups but they are generally advertising products, like clearer credit. I have NEVER had a pop-up come up with porn on it.
Date: 2/7/2004 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 62132    Ooohh!! I know what you mean!! Haha, I hate blue screens. I've actually punched the computer screen a few times. Haha! ^_^ I wish the people that make the stupid viruses and attack us lil people should infect a porn site with the abomination!! X_x Thanks for the warning. ((hugs))
Date: 2/7/2004 3:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    Whats a pop-up????
Date: 2/7/2004 3:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 55755    The library here uses net nanny to stop kids from getting onto porn sites. but like you said, it doesnt stop those. but i've tried to access pregnancy sites and stuff, and it wouldnt let me into those due to adult content. Make sense? Nope, didnt think so
Date: 2/7/2004 3:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30986    Cool, thanks hack. I'm gonna try that.
Date: 2/7/2004 3:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30986    Azayria, you probably don't have a husband that likes going to those sites on occasion. Those sites download stuff that does the pop-ups, I've told him this and he still goes to them sometimes that's why I'm trying to find a way to block porn completely.
Date: 2/7/2004 4:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Go to Google and download there tool bar which blocks pop ups..Mine has blocked 1645 so far..a few slip through now and than, but nothing like before.
Date: 2/7/2004 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 32133    i get porn pop-ups ALL the time

Date: 2/7/2004 9:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    The best thing is called system mechanic. Look it up on the web, It cost me I think 12.95, not only does it have a great pop up stopper, but a great defrag on it as well as ram recovery. I just love it.
Date: 2/7/2004 9:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 10344    You may like to go read this http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114440,00.asp it has some interesting info about spyware...which i thought sounded like something you may have.
Date: 2/16/2004 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 27046    LOL, I was just checking back to this post, and no Kysta, I do have a husband that does browse through that stuff every once and while, and I still don't get pop-ups with porn on them. Now sure once he is out there and is browsing around they pop up left and right and of course you close the page and another one pops up, but once he gets them all shut down they don't magically reappear. Also in the internet explorer if you click on tools, and then internet options, click on the advanced tab and take out the check mark in the place that says Enable third party browser extensions, it stops a lot of that junk too.
