America's Education System Honey Bubbles

My sister is studying as a teacher and let me tell you that America's education system is going wacko! lol They're not gonna let kids learn stuff by memorizing. They're going to make everything easier for them. Kids these days don't even have to memorize the times table! My mom is a teacher at a pretty good school and kids there don't even know how to SUBTRACT OR ADD. If they do, they say 'can i only do 5 problems?' do those single digit problems. And it doesn't help that so many parents these days are sueing this and sueing that to make everyting easier for their kids. I know a couple of schools where parents go like 'my child doesn't have to learn how to write in cursive or print. if he wants to than he'll go do it himself." and the teachers can't force the child because its 'against the code'. In the public school meetings they tell teacher not to touch or even pat a student and say he did a good job because its 'abusing the child'. THis is ABSURD! How are teachers supposed to get close and interact with the kid personally then?! A student won't trust a teacher unless they go to know them better. I know a child who just ran out of school in the middle of class and the teacher had to go after him and he was about to cross the street and a car was coming and he didn't see it and the teacher saved his life. but guess wat? she got sued for it because she 'touched the child'. Is this crazy or what? If we don't challenge kids to memorize and learnt things then they'll get lazy and in the future they won't exactly succeed! Many kids these days go like 'i dont feel like doing those problems so i'm not going to do it'. I know even some students who got assigned to afterschool program with my mom and they told her that they hated her and that they're not going to do any math or anything. What has America come to? Don't we want our kids to be smart? I wouldn't exactly want someone who was very lazy in school to be my doctor and perform surgery on me. would u? PArents are spoiling these kids by sueing everything as well and not challenging them. (not all parents) What do you think about this? Feel free to post your opinion.

Date: 2/5/2004 8:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 58809    Well I've gone to a Catholic school for the past 13 years...and my teachers always made me do problems, read out loud, memorize my tables and sometimes even poetry. Hmm. I'm thankful for that, even though I resented them for it back then. From what you said, it seems as if our educational system is going to pot, and nobody really seems to be doing much about it. Parents are ignorant and the poor teachers are underpaid. Looks like we're going to have a handful of spoiled, uneducated kids serving us when we get older. Yikes
Date: 2/5/2004 8:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    Hmmm all I can say is it is not that way down here. My kids give their teachers hugs all the time and I would never think of suing over that. My children have to memorize the tiems tables and learn cursive and if they refuse then they are sent out of class for insubordination. I know my youngest had a real hard time last year because he did not understand everything and so he reacted by throwing fits and disrupting class. He had to be sent to the office many times. So maybe teh area where you live is bad but I have not experienced this as of yet. I always say you can only get out of a school as much as you are willing to put in. SO if parents are not willing to contribute to their childrens education and teachers are not willing to go that extra mile and children dont want to learn the education system is jsut not going to be what it should or could be
Date: 2/6/2004 12:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 11348    It's not that way here either. I want to be a teacher in a few years, I know some teachers and have family in the public school here. The teachers work really hard with everyone to make sure they're learning everything I learned in school, and our school system has actually improved. Tests show students are actually smarter than they were in past years and teachers are more qualified. Unlike when I was in school, I have two very young brothers who absolutely love school! The go on and on about what they've learned.
Date: 2/6/2004 12:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 11348    Sometimes I even think my eleven year old brother is smarter than me! lol
Date: 2/6/2004 5:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 22080    our education system is so freaking outdated it isnt funny, we can do it all in our homes over the internet and such, i also dont think lack of school makes one lazy, i never liked school and i am far from lazy
Date: 2/6/2004 6:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Some people worry about prayer in school. I worry about the liberal social agenda that dominates our public schools. I think it was in Wisconsin where a kindergarden teacher decided to tell her 5 year old students that she is a lesbian. A five year old asked the teacher if she was a boy or girl..the teacher was "offended" and the child was reprimended. Why don't we just go a head and call schools what they've become, reeducation camps? If we got rid of teachers unions, awarded performance with pay instead of time in position with pay, turned schools over to private enterprise and gave parents a choice of where to send there children (which would be in almost all cases the best performing school) we wouldn't have garbage like this taking place and maybe we could get back to teaching kids writing, reading and arithmitic instead of sex education and tolerance for teachers personal lives.
Date: 2/6/2004 7:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 36967    I agree
Date: 2/6/2004 12:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    kelly making it a private enterprise would make it private schools and on top of that making the poor even less educated, do you honestly want that?
Date: 2/7/2004 11:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 50435    You don't have an education system. All the incessant whining and cries of "poor me" have pretty much ruined all that. You can't expect a twelve-year-old to know the product of 12 x 12. Jeez. That's just too much. He might stress out over that one. I'm not even going to get into this.
Date: 2/8/2004 7:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61472    actually my class all learned 12x12 in 3rd grade..
Date: 2/10/2004 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 53314    "In stead of sex education" ARE YOU INSANE?
Date: 2/24/2004 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 49348    Sex education is needed come on, would you wnat your daughter getting knocked up at 14 cos she didnt have some sex ed in school. Pfft looks like you dont know much, even with all your big out of date ideas
