I few months ago I submitted a poem at www.poetry.com . I was not really expecting anything to be sent back , I just thought it would be cool to publish my poems some where else rather than here . So...I enter this contest back in November of 2003 with a poem written for Kyle :-D . Nothing big , I have not posted it here , I;ll do that tonight . Any how , Today I walk in the door and my dad hands me this letter from the stack of mail in his hands ....a letter from the staff at poetry.com telling me that I am a finalist for the contest ! My poem is going to be published in a book called " eternal portraits" . I cannot believe my poem is going to be put in a book ! I am soo happy . But get this , the prize is one thousand US dollars , the grand prize is 10 thousand ! I dunno if I'll win either of those but the letter also said that there are 204 cash prizes . I was wondering if the letter was a hoax but I doubt it because there was a legal document in it stating that I needed to initial and sign it if it was my own work . And that if it was not and I still sent it in I could go to jail !!! What do you think about all of this ? Is this cool or what ?!

Date: 2/5/2004 5:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    It isn't a hoax dreamerpoet, I've gotten things published there and have the books to prove it and have won cash. You call that a hoax?
Date: 2/5/2004 5:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 16442    Poetry.com is a hoax site. My daughter submitted poem after poem and won with every one of them. My other daughter then submitted a poem that wasnt really a poem just to see what would happen, guess what? She was a finalist too. Do NOT give them your money.
Date: 2/5/2004 5:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 43807    i am a finalist also. YAy.

Date: 2/5/2004 5:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 16442    They most certainly DO ask you for money
Date: 2/5/2004 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    a friend of mine got a "finalist" letter for posting "i love my cat" so yeah i call it a hoax not to mention 10 people i knew were ALL finalists in a competition
Date: 2/5/2004 5:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    Well everytime I submitted a poem they have NEVER asked for my money
Date: 2/5/2004 5:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    you *have* to buy the book. That *is* asking for money
Date: 2/5/2004 5:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40979    Thye didn't ask me for money unless I wanted to submit my biography . which I do not plan on doing .
Date: 2/5/2004 5:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40979    And if yuo have the books to proove it lol...then I would think it is real :-) plus , who cares if I don't get money , having my poem in a book is good enough !
Date: 2/5/2004 5:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40979    They said there was no obligation to buy the book
Date: 2/5/2004 5:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    *not* with them hon, any REAL publisher would be DISGUSTED by this...it's nothing more than getting your money.
Date: 2/5/2004 5:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    You don't HAVE to buy the book. It states in there you don't. I never have and my poems have been in the book. Our local library has them and I've seen them in there
Date: 2/5/2004 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    Here's something that was posted with the address and email to the attorney general's office about it. "Poetry.com is a literary scam. It is a small business that operates out of Maryland and pulls in over $12 million/year. Everyone who submits a poem to their site or contest is automatically a 'semi-finalist'. It's all part of a pyramid scheme to get unsuspecting amateur poets to buy an anthology with their poems in it. The cost $49.99, with multiple poems on each of the xeroxed pages."
Date: 2/5/2004 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 62506    I checked out their site a while back. It's legit!
I didn't submit anything because I'm not that good. Their poetry archives are awesome to read!
LOL! to Nimiwae and congrats to you! woodshed

Date: 2/5/2004 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    pffft sorry hon.....coming from someone who KNOWS better they WILL
Date: 2/5/2004 5:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40979    LOL I really don't care if it is a hoax...if they say I am not obligated to buy any thing , then I ain't buying it .:-D
Date: 2/5/2004 5:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 53360    i have to agree with Dreamer and MP here, I was also a finalist once, they wanted me to buy the book my poem was supposedly in, or it wouldnt get published, and then when it came time for the"poetry ball" or whatever its called, they said i would be an honorary reader, and all this other hoohah, but, heres the kicker, i had to make travel arrangements, hotel reservations, and last but not least, i had to BUY my own ticket to get into the ball thingy. I know how exciting it can be to get "recognized", but dont get your hopes up for poetry.com, sorry
Date: 2/5/2004 5:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    poetry.com is a HUGE hoax. EVERYONE gets published for a FEE..They want you to PAY for the book..
Date: 2/5/2004 5:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    OK, well I don't know what you people did that said you had to buy the book to be published, because like I said, I never bought any books and my poems were still in there
Date: 2/5/2004 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    This happened to me a long time ago, and they keep on sending me letters saying I am a "finalist" even though I did not submit anything to them .... believe me, DreamerPoet and Moonpriestess are only trying to help because they care and they don't want to see you getting hurt or having you lose money ((hugs))
Date: 2/5/2004 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    http://www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm18345.html
Date: 2/5/2004 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    Hun, if it was a scam and it was known, they wouldn't be on the web anymore
Date: 2/5/2004 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    Of course they are still in there, but if YOU want to have a copy of the book then you have to buy the book..They wont give you a free copy of the book.
Date: 2/5/2004 5:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40979    So then what do I do ? Not send it back ?
Date: 2/5/2004 5:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i was a finalist all three times i entered. and i could own my own copy of the book i was published in for like 65 dollars. i was not about to pay to see my own poems in print. i never went any further than that, so i cant tell ya for sure if it is a hoax or not. all i can tell ya is i will not pay almost 70 dollars to see my work in a book. i hope for your sake it isn't a hoax.
Date: 2/5/2004 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 56074    Every poem I've submitted was published also. They put anything they get in the books. I'm proud of my poems that did get published but I know they are just a hoax.
Date: 2/5/2004 5:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    Nimiwea, there are TONS of websites on the net that are total and complete scams..LOL..Just because they are still there doesnt mean a thing..They are paying for that domain. Trust me, its one big scam. I submitted several poems there as well and I was a finalist EVERY single time and every single time I could own a copy of the book my poems were published in for as little as 49.99! What a joke!
Date: 2/5/2004 5:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    hon a DECENT publisher will GIVE you a copy of YOUR book, NO publisher with a GOOD reputation will make you PAY
Date: 2/5/2004 5:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    Hmm...interesting scam then being as I won money from it. Oh well
Date: 2/5/2004 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    been there done that huge hoax...
Date: 2/5/2004 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Been there too... Look through my posts.. I at that time also didnt think it was a hoax.. But sadly it is you guys.. The only thing that keeps them up and running is that they dont MAKE you buy the book, they just put a nice little persuasion into it, and they know that since you wrote it, you would be more inclined to buy the thing. After I posted my post I went back and just typed a bunch of nonsense words in there, just to see if it was a hoax. And sure enough it was picked as a finalist. Sorry you guys.. I know it's upsetting, but its the truth. A real publisher would never, ever make you pay for your own works, they provide you with a free copy. *huge hugs*
Date: 2/5/2004 9:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    this is from personal experience...first off I vouch for KozzmicK as well as DP & MP...I posted my 9-11 poems in their memorial and two years later my best friend who is a librarian in an elementary school tells me that my poem was on a poster in the hallway of her school...even though it was an honor in one way, I felt robbed in another...well, I know how Willie feels...
