Happiness Is A Warm Puppy

The night before Christmas Eve, my son found a bird. We had lost our parrot in October, when he escaped from his outdoor cage. We were heart broken since I had rasied this parrot from a hatchling (including all-night feedings).

So, on Dec.23rd, my son went to get the mail, and found a Severe Macaw. The poor baby had been loose a long time (his nails were painfully long), and he was very, very thin. BUt he let my son pick him up & bring him home.

We named him Christmas. I cleaned him up (he ate for the first 10 minutes he was in the house), and since we had all the special food (Parrot mix), and a nice cage, we fattened him up & played with him. Within the month, he became a really beautiful bird. And, boy, could he talk!

I checked the newspapers, and the want ads to see if I could find an owner. He had no "foot-band", so he was not professionally bred. He also did not have a micro=chip. It appeared he was abandoned. (That does happen a lot down here. We have a lot of wild parrots & sometimes when birds get expensive to feed, people will just let them go).

Anyway, Sunday, I was on my way to the hospital for another test, when I stopped at the pet store. They had so many puppies there! MY son & niece were with me. Now, my son is 12 years old, and we have not had our own dog since my son was born. That was tough, because I was raised with dogs.

The first dog that caught my son's eye (and my nieces), was a miniature dachound, 14 weeks old. Now, I had mini-doxies as a child. And, this one was SO cute & SO sweet-tempered. He is AKC, and had papers going back to the great-grandparents from the breeder. But, I didn't need to really his papers to see he was a beauty.

Anyway, I gave in, and was holding him, when the stores owner tried the "hard-sell". I have to tell you, where I live smaller dogs sell for a lot of money. Half-joking, I said "I'll trade you a bird for him". She (the owner) said for me to bring in Christmas the next day.

So Monday, the day before yesterday, I brought in Christmas.(The Parrot). And traded him for the loveliest, sweetest-natured puppy I have ever seen! He did not come from a "puppy-mill" (I checked). He has all his shots, and they gave me a free appointment with the vet that the store paid for. They also threw in a leash, collar, and a bag of expensive (exclusive) puppy food.

As I type this, I am holding a tiny puppy (he weighs a pound), with the loveliest, liquid brown eyes. We are completely in love with him.

His name is Oskar (like "Oscar", Oscar Meyer Weiners).

You know, it actually feels like divine intervention. There is no way I could have afforded this little guy on my own. And, ready for this? Oskar lived in a cage before I got him. But its been two days & the little bugger is house-trained already?

I cannot tell you how much we already love him.

Sorry this is so long. But, it's a totally true story :):):)

Date: 2/5/2004 7:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    thank you ! I do indeed love this little boy. All the animals in our family do become "family members". He has been an absolute delight! I will miss the bird, but the owner of the pet store bonded with Christmas right away, and I found out to day, the owner (Sue) is keeping him. So there are happy endings all around. The poor abandoned bird has a loving home, and we have a new family member. I think warm, puppy smell is one of the best smells there is. Doxie's have such wonderful personalities. We had two minis when I was a kid. (A red male named "Squirt", and a golden female named "Amber".) They are so smart, and Oskar seems very eager to please. Aside from one boo-boo, he is going outside to do his buisness. We introduced him to my sister's cocker spaniel puppy, Mandy, and they played for HOURS. I was pleased to see he is not agressive, or timid. He is very social with people & other animals. Last night he meet the ferrets (we have two), and played with them. I am so happy with Oskar, and so is my son. My friends think the story of how we got the puppy is really funny. I think it was just meant to be. Thank you for your replies....
