Why did the people think Jesus was a drunkard and a Glutton?

Hi Guys, There are a couple other bible verses that just make church authorities cringe. What is especially revealing about them is that they are quotes from Jesus himself. The Bible verses I speak of can be found in Matthew Ch 11:19 and Luke Ch. 7:34

In these verses he admits that the people view him as a Drunkard and a glutton. I find this odd because other than one wedding where he made water into wine there are no other mentions of him hitting the bottle heavily. At least not to the point where people viewed him as a drunkard. Getting a reputation as a drunkard involved more than just an occasional overindulgence. It is from repeated excessive abuse of strong drink or wine that earns a person this label.

The other view, he claims the people had of him was that he was a glutton. WOW, where did that come from? I mean I thought this guy regularly spent time in the desert on 40 day and 40 night fasts.

Just in case some folks may not be aware, glutton does not mean someone who overeats on occasion. A glutton was a person who regularly attended banquet feasts which were the rage in the first and second century. All kinds of exotic dishes were prepared like Peacock Brains, Flamingo tongues and Elephant ears and meals often consisted of 100 courses or more. These organised feast just for the pleasure of consumption also provided private tents where particapants could go to vomit up thier food. A long feather was provided to help vomit and aftrwards the person could rest for a while and then resume the eating. These were banquets that lasted for days.

So would anyone care to tell us why the People of Jerusalem viewed him as a drunkard and a glutton?

Bye for now. Enki

Date: 2/4/2004 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    Matt 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. It's in red to show its Jesus speaking. Luke pretty much says the same thing and the verse before it is For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath the devil.

Date: 2/4/2004 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Enki, This should help you to understand why the Pharisees accused Jesus of being a glutton and a drunkard. The Pharisees lied about Him, accused Him, plotted against Him, chased Him, and finally killed Him. There is much more of what they did if you would like for me to post them... Luke 14:1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. ( They watched Him to see if He did anything so they could accuse Him.)..Matt 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day...

Matt 9:34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils...

Matt 12:14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him..

Matt 15:1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?..

Matt 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, *tempting him*, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? ..

Matt 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle (trap) him in his talk...

Matt 22: 34-36 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, *tempting him*, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?.. John 11:47-49 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all. (In other words, deny that He does miracles)..

John 11:53-54 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews...

John 11:55-57 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
Matt 27:1-2 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor..Matt 27: 62-63 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again..

Date: 2/4/2004 9:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    And you said you were christian for what? 15 years. Perhaps if you paid attention you might know the answer to this question. But see the point is you KNOW the answer to this, you only posted it to once again try to make nothing into something. Rusure explained things, I cant believe that your being so childish.
Date: 2/4/2004 9:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 62506    Hello Enki,May I offer my opinion? Jesus spoke to everyone in Hebreic parables. Parables were enigmatic phrases meant to be understood only by the faithful. In his reference to john the baptist ,who neither ate nor drank, is a referance to his lifestyle of never letting strong drink touch his lips. And to the fact that he only ate wild honey and locust for 40 years.
In reference to eating and drinking, Jesus was refering to the miracle of turning water into wine. Eating refers to the feeding of the multitude, remember it, he turned a young boys sack lunch into enough bread and fish to feed 5,000. Rumors circulated around about him as they did all prophets. That did not mean that the rumors were true. Only that they were out there. The Hebrew bigshots (saducees and pharisees)were loosing people and money to this new religion and spread "rumors" in an attempt to discredit the leaders of it (Jesus & John) and gain back some of what they lost. The religious leaders today are no smarter than the Hebrew big shots back then or they would have taught you this. It seems the money grabbers are still around today.
This may clear up some of your questions or confuse you even more. You decide. I'm tired.

Date: 2/5/2004 2:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11528    Hi Rusure, Good answer from what we are told in the bible, remember that Jesus trained as a Rabbi in the school of Hillel who was the most famous Pharisee of the early first century. Rabbi taught his student to seek peace, love all creatures and bring them closer to the Torah. No the reason that the verse about being a drunkard and a glutton is in the bible is because it is being said by someone else! That is his twin brother Judas Thomas saying those words. It is on record that Jesus had a twin and when the Romans rewrote the new Testament they sort of blended the character of the two brothers together into one. Jesus was a peace loving man but his twin was a violent man prone to bouts of heavy drinking and attending those gluttonous feasts. The twin Judas, (Not to be confused with Judas Isaricot) was also the person who fashioned a whip and went in and flipped over the tables of the money changers. Havent Yu ever wondered why a man of peace like Jesus would get a whip and cause such a commotion? That wasnt in keeping with his character. Jesus a man who went about healing people and preaching love could not have possibly been out getting drunk regularly to the point that it gained him a reputation as a drunkard. Rusure, are You familiar with the dead sea scrolls? Im not but apparently the scrolls speak of a good teacher and the evil one. Judas, the twin is the evil one. I know You would have difficulty admitting this because it goes against Your beliefs but consider this, the Romans who were the largest Cult and power at the time of Jesus have twisted the bible around and rewritten parts of it to suit thier purposes. Jesus was not a drunkard nor a glutton, that is his brother, the twin speaking. Bye for now. Enki
Date: 2/5/2004 2:08:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11528    Hi Wood, interesting reply. I gave the answer to Rusure just above this reply. I have to head out of town today but will elaborate more on this when I come home next week. Jesus wasnt a drunkard or glutton, it is the Romans who twistd the story around and blended the characters of two brothers nto one character. The verses supposedly from Jesus actually came from his twin Judas Thomas. Take care. Enki
Date: 2/5/2004 6:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Thanks Enki. I suppose I can't expect anyone to spoonfeed me the verses LOL. I had heard about this twin brother only fairly recently and it does seem to make sense. I've always suspected the Romans had a hand in editing the Bible. I'm glad that Jesus wasn't a drunkard and a glutton.

Date: 2/5/2004 1:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    Let me make this clear, just because people view him as such, does not mean it is true.
Date: 2/5/2004 2:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 62249    Ah, if Jesus wanted to get runk, who's gonna stop him? It's not like he was an alchoholic or anything... and also, that was only for big feasts, it's not like they ate that much food constantly. Although I do find the vomiting part disgusting, but I've read many times it was an acceptable practice during that time period... especially with the Romans, and Greeks - MC Bacon
