ok, anyone specialized in chameleons and how to care for them?? cuz 2 days ago I saw some guy selling chameleons and turtles on the street in morocco, and I just couldnt walk any further without buying two adorable tiny chameleons the length of my thumb. Still im ashamed to say I have no idea how to care for them!! I cut so branches from a tree and set the chameleons on them, but they dont seem to move much, and they havent eat the lettuce I put on the branches, so I caught 3 flies, and handfed them, I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do or not..HELP!!

Date: 2/3/2004 5:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I am no expert on these wonderful creatures, but I do know they eat very little and not everyday. They have to have a warm climate, with water. It may help if you can get to a librqqry and see if they have any books to learn from.. another idea is to go to http://www.google.com and type in the words chameleon care and handling.. that will probably give you over 40,000 pages to choose from and some of that info about animal care on the internet is very good and helpful...

Date: 2/3/2004 6:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 60052    This is an excellent website that should tell you everything you need to know and some stuff you don't! lol http://reptileforums.com/care_sheets/lizards/veiled_chameleon.htm
Date: 2/3/2004 9:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    The main type of food easily found in your local petstore are crickets. They are rather cheap and easy to keep in a small aquarium. However, they are not very nutritious. Before you feed them to your chameleon, allow them to eat some nutritious foods such as collard greens, potatoes, fruits, and vegaetables

Chameleons need a varied diet. To accomplish this, you must feed them other insects besides crickets. Mealworms, Superworms, Waxworms, Moths, Flies, and other insects do well. You can also catch wild insects as long as they aren't poisonous or from areas where pesticides have been used.

All food items should be dusted with vitamin and mineral supplements as well as calcium. Some supplements you can use are Sticky Tongue Farms Miner-All, RepCAL, and Herptivite. These work really well in providing the vitamins and calcium that your chameleons need. You should dust your chameleon's food 2-3 times weekly. This should provide your chameleon with the proper amount of nutrition.

Date: 2/3/2004 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 10344    Your in trouble....chameleons need special care. Go to the pet store and buy crickets...get the protein powder coating for the crickets also. You cant put them in aquariums either...you will either need to buy or build a free moving air container (like a box with screen sides). You will need to buy three different lights in three different spectrums to keep them healthy. My friend ended up paying like 800 bucks before the habitat was complete....go to this link for some ideas. http://www.expandtheworld.com/html/sadiki_the_chameleon_page_3.html
Date: 2/3/2004 11:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48527    ooh I know im in trouble!! I found them thrown in a potato box and being sold for 3 dollars, and thought oh, ill make a better home for them, now im scared ill kill them!!
Date: 2/3/2004 1:22:00 PM  ( Admin-AK )   Honestly, I have no knowledge at all about Chameleons. I would strongly advise you to go to google or some other search engine and type in Chameleon Care & further educate yourself about the species....I own exotic animals & I have learned that they often take special care. For instance, I have sugar gliders, without calcium, or if they have too much phosphorus, they will surely die. You want to make sure that you know about anything that the Chameleons might die from a lack of or simply things that will kill them. Quickly, go educate yourself about these creatures, I am sure there are hundreds of internet sites that can tell you how to care for them. Thanks for sharing, I wish you the best of luck with your new pets. Take Care!
Date: 2/3/2004 11:43:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48527    oohh, i've searched the sites and they are very useful, the thing is there is NO petshop around here!!!(im in morocco right now, and leaving back to the uae in two days, there I can find a petshop, and take them to the vet) so they're gonna have to try to stay alive untill then..and im gonna have to keep them alive in n e way
Date: 2/3/2004 11:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48527    so one more question to all chameleon owners, will heaters be good or bad for them in this freezing weather(since I've learned they like warm, damp weather (ofcourse I wont scorch them with it, I'll keep it a good distance away from them)should I use it or not? gotta go insect hunting too (the closest place to a petshop is FRANCE!!)
Date: 2/5/2004 11:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 60052    Don't use a heater, it's better to use a sunlamp or even a 100 watt light bulb over the cage.
