This will probably sound like an excerpt from "Miss Manners or Dear Abby", but it really does ring true.
Today's world is a bit faster paced than I like, but it goes without saying a little courtesy goes a long way.
Last Wednesday evening I went to a sub-sandwich shop, which is part of a major company. The store was still open, and I checked the time on my car stereo, 9:50 p.m.
The store advertises it is open until 10:00 p.m.
So I walk inside, and notice there are two employees behind the counter. The first employee asks me for my order, while the second employee is busy counting out the cash register.
I asked for a Meatball Sub, which was quickly denied by the first employee, for he said that the "meatballs were cold". I was about to place a different order when the first employee dissapeared to the back room. I looked towards the second employee, but she was too busy counting out the register to glance my way.
That is when a section of the store's lighting was switched off. I began to feel as if I were not welcome.
I asked the cashier, who was still too busy to look my way, if the store was closed. But got no answer.
Well, there's always the Taco Bell or Wendy's nearby, and I opted to take my leave. But when I got home, I got on my computer and contacted the Sub Sandwich shop's corporate office. And asked in a polite way if this was the way the store is to be operated. I also told them that I was not attempting to get free food, for in today's fast food world, that seems to be nothing more than a pacifier. I am willing to pay for my food, I merely wanted to let the company know that this store has lousy service.
12 hours later I get a phone call from the store's manager. Before I could say a word he aplogized for what had happened and offered me a free sandwich for my trouble. I thanked him for his prompt response, and declined the free sandwich. All that mattered to me was, and I told him this, if a person shows up at your store while it's still open for business, they should be served and treated as a customer. That being said, I thanked him for his time and attention to the matter.
On the other side to this matter....
I recently tried to upgrade my internet system that was given me free of charge by my internet provider. I knew that no matter how easy it is to follow the set-up instructions, I would surely find a way to mess things up. It's happened before, usually because I did'nt follow all the steps.
I call for tech support, and five minutes later I was back online and surfin' the net. I took the time to send that company an E-mail thanking them for the help given me. (Afterall, I am no wiz when it comes to computers. )
A simple "Thank You" can go a long way in just about any relationship. And you never know what may occur down the road. If I go back to that Sub Sandwich shop, maybe they won't poison me when I order my next Meatball sandwich. (LOL) And if I ever need Tech support from my internet provider, I hope they remember how gracious and thankfull I was for their help.
