Well, folks, I had my first experience with an IV.... +Lady_Blaze+

Last saturday was when it began and it steadily got worse and worse overnight. You all probably know what I'm talking about: being sick.

I got the flu last saturday, and let me tell you, I was hit with it pretty brutally. Within two days I could barely move because my body ached so much. Hacking, spitting, choking, and gagging on crud was an order. Along with a fever that never seemed to go below 100. <-- Boy, is that the truth. I took tylonal, and it worked for about an hour or so and then my temp shot up again.

Anyway, so on to the IV part. My sister took me to the doctor on monday. By this time I was completely not myself. I was much paler than my usual self, it took me huge amounts of energy simply to walk, SLOWLY. And I was just beginning to get dizzy.

The doctor not only found I had the flu, a new, unusual strain, but that I was also severely dehydrated. He recommonded an IV of water be put in me. Of course I didn't know if I should say yes or no, since the only people I've seen with IVs in them were old..

But I decided to do it.

So the lady stuck a little needle in me, inserted a little tube, which was hooked up to another slender tube attached to one of those drip bags. The bag was completely full of basically salt water.

Boy, was it an experience. My hand felt really cold because the liquid being pumped into me was so much cooler than my body temp, but I felt much better afterwords.. Less dizzy..and my body was less achy..

So, now you know.

+Lady_Blaze+

How it changed my life:

I'm a little weak right now, but recovering pretty quickly.

Date: 1/29/2004 7:09:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 56840     Thanks for stopping by, Becky! Old pro! What'd you go through? Or shouldn't I ask? :P The things I'm having trouble with now are what little coughing I'm still having and getting over the whole 'sick' feeling..
Date: 1/29/2004 7:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    oh 7 surgeries, various mri's...plenty of er trips....I can't even count the number of times I've just had blood drawn LOL.....glad your feeling better
Date: 1/29/2004 7:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 56840    WOW!! Becky, you must have countless little holes in you! :P They won't let me give blood because I don't weigh enough and I'm too thin. That's fine with me, I guess.. I never realized how long the little piece of tubing they stick in you was.. I thought it was going to be itty-bitty. That thing's, like, two inches long!! =O
Date: 1/29/2004 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    Oh I've never given blood...I am not even sure if I'm eligible...I've just had that many blood tests done LOL....2002 I was going in about once a month to have anywhere from 3-7 vials at a time drawn LOL
Date: 1/29/2004 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    Tues, Wed, and Thursday I have to do 3 days in a row of Steroid (Solu-Medrol) IV. I know it's goofy but I actually like the flush at the end. But solu-medrol makes your mouth tastes like copper and the after effects are no picnic. I'm glad you enjoyed you IV experience.
Date: 1/29/2004 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    (((hugs))) On Christmas Eve I started to feel really sick with my tummy and then it hit me really bad, for about 9 days. I was in so much pain with my tummy and the body aches I went hysterical after 7 days (I dont take pain very well) and my dad took me to the doctors and he said I had a virus-strain of the flu and because I have asthma I needed to be watched in case I formed pnemonia... it was one of the worst feelings I have ever felt in my life... and I am so sorry you had to go through that, keep strong and I am wishing and praying for a fast recovery for you! I was told chicken soup, vitamin C, and lots of water and rest was what I needed. Get well soon!
Date: 1/29/2004 8:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Ive never had a prob with needles..but I can understand being afraid of something. I hope you get better soon!
Date: 1/30/2004 1:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hi, Lady Blaze Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Sounds like you took the IV pretty well. When I was getting prepared for surgery last year, a lady next to me went ballistic when the nurse tried to administer an IV. I was next and well, totally freaked out by the time they got to me. Ended up being "not-so-bad," though. See ya
Date: 1/30/2004 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Hey..I had my first experience with discontinuing an IV today..I did pretty well too, the man never felt me remove it.
Date: 2/4/2004 7:13:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 56840    Hi, folks.. A little update.. I had a big relapse in the past couple of days, but not enough for me to go back to the hospital for another hydration stint. I thought I was better enough to go to school..but it turns out I wasn't quite ready, and I was taken home by my dear sister. Then carted to several caring people's houses who all wanted to take care of me.. But now I'm back home, not ALL better, but much better than I was before... God bless..
Date: 2/4/2004 7:14:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 56840    I know I make it sound all hunky-dory.. But it was far from a cake-walk.. I've been told that babies, toddlers, have died from the flu strain I had. Gives me the creeps.. I need to go lie down now..
