January 29, 2004 (DANIA BEACH, Fla.) — A Florida teen foiled his own alleged robbery attempt when he found that he brought the wrong bullets.
Police in Broward County say 16-year-old high school student was attempting to rob a 7-Eleven last Thursday when he realized that his rifle had no bullets. With surveillance cameras rolling, the teenager tried — unsuccessfully — to jam .40-caliber bullets into his .22-caliber rifle.
"It's like twice as big as the gun will fit," Broward County sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal told The Miami Herald. "It won't go."
A customer realized what was going on and tackled the teenager. Other customers then joined in and helped hold the hapless alleged robber until police arrived.
The teen faces armed robbery charges as the Florida state attorney's office decides whether to prosecute him as an adult.
