How Do You Like Your Novacaine?.......

I have recently had a large amount of dental work done over the past several months and I can't get over the differences in the dentists today, versus the dentists I went to as a child.

When I was a kid and you needed to have a cavity filled, the dentist shot you up with novicaine in the gum above the tooth he was going to drill. It never seemed to numb it up completely and there was still that distance pain as he drilled away, but once it wore off the soreness in your gum wasn't much.

Now the dentist that I see puts the novacaine into the the hinge of the jaw. Today I was having work done on my lower left side. So he injected the novacaine into the hinge of my jaw near the bottom. This is the third time I have novacaine administered this way. Within seconds the entire bottom left side of my mouth, the left side of my tongue and to the middle of my bottom lip was numb. The difference in the numbness is awesome. You literally don't feel a thing because the novacaine is injected right into the nerve that runs along your jaw, this feeds all those little nerves under your teeth. Which apparently are missed most times injecting it above the tooth. Apparently they also have to use more novacaine the other way. I remember several times coming home numbed up to my eyeball so bad that my eye lid wouldn't blink and STILL had pain!...LOL

I don't know if it's common practice for a dentist to do this, because my best friend's dentist apparently doesn't. Downfall: The soreness afterwards of the needle site never seemed to be so "sore". In the hinge of the jaw it's quite sore afterward and things like yawning aren't comfortable....LOL. I still think that this is much better though.

Have you been given novacaine this way? Do you like it better?

Date: 1/20/2004 5:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    Reason being is that the top teeth have to be numbed individually..The bottom teeth can be numbed all at once,by injections in the jaw muscle..At least that's how my dentist explained it....
Date: 1/20/2004 5:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    Py I had work done on my upper left side two months ago and he did the novacaine the same way for that work. It had the same effect. However when it came to extraction, I was numb up to my eyeballs for those because he shot me up good and he did do it above the tooth. I got stabbed a LOT of times for that work..LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    i dunno what they do after they gas me....quite frankly don't care either...if i see the needle they won't get near me and they know it..lol
Date: 1/20/2004 5:43:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    LOL DP. After the novacaine is in I completely hate the whole feeling of tiredness in my arms and legs. My adrenaline SOARS when I brace for pain. I can handle a bunch of it, I had two kids, would do it again without fear if I had to but geeze it does a number on that adrenaline..LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    I've only gotten injected with novacaine once and it was done right by the tooth. The only pain I felt was a soreness in my gum, but it was really no big deal. Heh. -
Date: 1/20/2004 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    Ummm Nope! I don't go to the dentist often though LOL...I have a major fear of them...which forces me to keep my teeth in good condition....I haven't had any novicane since I was about sixteen when I got my crowns done....and they didn't do a great job of numbing me up..
Date: 1/20/2004 5:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    I used to go every six months when I was kid. Then I turned into an adult and couldn't afford to send my kids to the dentist let alone myself...LOL. The kids have gone, they are A okay, I have been having work done for 6 months and for going 8 years, I was shocked it wasn't more..LOL. I have a few trips to go and way too much money but *sigh* it's gotta be done....LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    it's funny as can be...i am terrified of the pain of the needle more than the pain of the work they do lol, but i've had so much medical crud done to me it's second nature now...just the fear of the dang needle lol
Date: 1/20/2004 5:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 29532    never, but I will soon. This is the same thing as an epidural. tee hee, God's gift to women.
Date: 1/20/2004 5:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    I have a problem with needles, I don't mind novacaine, and have no clue why, though it does make me a wreck, I can tolerate having my blood draw. Flu shot? LMBO!!!!! I would rather brave the flu!
Date: 1/20/2004 5:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    having it drawn too...LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    I didn't have one of those for my daughter, and I was more or less forced to have one for my son. I had a bad bladder infection, was 10 centimeters and could not push because of the pain of the infection. By the time they got it in, it didn't touch labor, which really wasn't the problem, but it did take away the atrocious pain I had from the infection. If I were to have another, I wouldn't opt for it again either. To this day it is sore to the touch where they put that thing in. It creeps me out! LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    Az....When I was in the hospital for appendicitis, they were drawing blood, and it took FIVE people to hold me down....lol
Date: 1/20/2004 5:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 27403    I prefer my novacaine straight in the vein! LOL! Love and Light
Date: 1/20/2004 5:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    Oh you are one of those people you want to slap silly huh? LOL! That's okay my dad could never handle ANYTHING when it came to us kids getting hurt. The doctor would say now Mr. B you aren't going to pass out are ya? Nope, and then bang over he would go. LOL
Date: 1/20/2004 5:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 27046    LOL well umm that was enlightening LW...LOL :P
Date: 1/20/2004 6:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 38601    I've only ever had some gel-like novacaine rubbed on my gums and around my teeth when I got my teeth pulled out 5 years ago
Date: 1/20/2004 6:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I've only had novacaine about once in my life when I was eight years old. I don't remember much about it except, I remember going to the grocery store afterwards and looking at my reflection in the window. I had been walking around the store for awhile drooling blood all over my shirt and I didn't notice until then. I don't have my wisdom teeth yet though.
Date: 1/20/2004 6:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    The dentists I've been to here in Australia always have injected into the jaw as you describe. So I've known no different. Not that I make it a habit to go to the dentists for fillings.lol. Anyways, I'm glad that you've found a suitable way to have the necessary work done on your teeth. Hope you don't have to go thru too much more. Take care,
Date: 1/20/2004 6:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    Well I need to go see a dentist real soon have not been in a long time...but it never really bothered me...not the needles or the drilling at least teh pain from it didnt...it is the sound that killed me. Shrill sounds like that just send chills down my spine but I imagine I will have to get used to it cause I am going to have some work done real soon
Date: 1/20/2004 7:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 59608    YES I JUST GOT IT DONE TODAY!!!!!! I had filling done.
Date: 1/20/2004 7:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 19460    i had novacaine given to me in the jaw hinge. it didnt help me any. i still felt everyyyyyything LOL BUT when I had it done, my tooth was absessed. Speaking of teeth, I broke my molar Saturday and now have to wait til the 28th to have it pulled! Sucks to be me ( LOL
Date: 1/21/2004 3:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    I like my novacaine shaken... Not stirred. But in any event as long as it stops the pain. And less is better for me. Seems like when they shot me with that stuff my chest constricts. I have told the dentist beforehand and they monitor me closely.
Date: 1/21/2004 5:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 20497    LOL!! Yep, they did the same to me!! I don't necessarily like it but it sure does the trick for like 5 hours LOL It's interesting how the nerves work and they go up to each individual tooth. Hate the dentist(
