pet advice needed .....DESPERATLY

I have a dog who is an escape artist. He is about 125 lbs. chocolate lab. We have gone through at least 10 different collars for him, but he would always get off of them.

Recently I bought him a harness. It lasted 2 days and he figured out how to get off of it. I am trying to find a full body harness for him, but I am not having any luck.

I have to find something that is going to keep him on his leash though because my neighbor already turned me in to the police saying I have a vicious dog, but the only thing vicious on him is he might lick ya to death. I had the police literally come to my house and tell me if I dont keep my dog on a leash they are going to take him away because vicious dogs can not roam the streets. I asked the officer ( since I knew him) if he was scared of dogs and he was like not really. I said ok come on in and I am warning you that my dog is about 125 lbs before you come in. He came in, I called the dog, he ran up to the officer and licked him. The officer laughed and petted him for awhile and said ok just keep him on a leash because the neighbors already told the police next time my dog gets off his chain they are going to shoot him. My dog is a little over a year old and I dont know what to do to keep him on the leash. I let him out to do his business and within seconds he is off the harness and gone. any suggestions on where I caould get a full body harness or some other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and before someone suggests to put him in a pen type of deal. Forget it we already tried and he dug his way out as soon as we put him in there-lol

Date: 1/19/2004 3:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 26049    have you tried calling Petsmart and maybe getting him into training?
Date: 1/19/2004 3:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 38601    your neighbors sound evil...if they have a pet, make the same threat...no matter how ridiculous it sounds, lol...go to local pet stores and see if you can get your dog trained or if they can reccomend something that would work
Date: 1/19/2004 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 59861    wow, i had the EXACT SAME problem. i had a blond lab named Annie. she was an escape artist too. one of our neighbors called the cops on us and we had to give her away to a good home b/c we didnt want her put down. try the harnesses that go around the neck and shoulders, put it on really tight, or else they WILL get out. the only other thing i can think of if have you had your dog fixed? he may just be havin a bad day with the male hormone doggie thing and is looking for a lover.lol. try asking your vet too. thats all i can think of. peace n luv
Date: 1/19/2004 3:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    you talking in the yard?.....Been there done that...got a nice thick rope and a choke chain for my dog.....Might sound cruel and would only work if your dog is not outside ALL the time. *IE can come in when he wants*....if it's for 'walking' get a choke chain and a halti....they work nice...though people might ask if your dog is muzzled LOL i get that all the time...it is NOT a muzzle..
Date: 1/19/2004 4:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 51292    Yeah one of those choke chain things might work.. it sounds like your neighbors are a bunch of meanines :0( lol
Date: 1/19/2004 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 56864    That's like accusing a baby of trying to assassinate the prez! Why would your neighbors do that? Anyway, I wish I had put a post like this once, because both of my dogs escaped and got hit by cars ...
Date: 1/19/2004 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 16705    years ago i had a choc lab and she got loose all the time. we even put up an electrical fence and she still got out, paid alot of money for a harness she got out of it. the only thing that worked for me was a choker collar but make sure it has a swivel on it so it doesn't get knotted up, she couldn't get out of that for some reason. good luck to you. Date: 1/19/2004 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 51635    I mean the kind you burry, not and electrified chain link deal...
Date: 1/20/2004 6:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    sounds like my dalmation has been reincarnated into your dog! we spent a whole saturday buring the invisible fence and she dug it up that night! i'm serious. i thought my dog was the devil. i had the police waiting on me when i came home once. anyway, we had problems walking her because she would DRAG us all over the neighborhood. we got a type of collar that goes on kinda like a muzzle but she could still eat, drink, bark and do all the doggie things. the leash snaps on under her chin and when you walk her she didn't drag anymore. it has something to do with you controlling how she turns her head. it sounds like doggie abuse but it's really not and it doesn't hurt at all. it puts you in controll. we got it through a vet catalog called foster-smith or maybe smith-foster. i'm pretty sure it's one of those names. it was about 15 dollars about eight years ago and my dog never broke it. she died last month and we still have the thing. see if they have a website. maybe they can send you a catalog. if you can't find it you can give me a yell and i'll see if i still have any around here. good luck!
