Stuttering Problems in Children??? *IP*

My 2 1/2 year old nephew just started stuttering recently. It's nothing bad from what I heard from my mother but it just came out of the blue. My nephew is VERY advanced for his age and it seems like his brain is working faster then his mouth. From what I understand from my mother he's stuttering like words, he'll be like mama mama mama instead of mmmmm mama. I was just curious if anyone else has had this problem with their children growing up and if they grow out of it? My sister in law has been reading that we shouldn't draw attention to it. Any help would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks....

Date: 1/19/2004 10:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 40530    I don't know but I know I do it to. I repeat things because I feel I can't say them right. As for the "brain working too fast or the mouth" thing....that's what happens with me! :-P
Date: 1/19/2004 10:42:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    My mother noticed he does it more when he's excited. They are just hoping he grows out of it by the time he goes to school.
Date: 1/19/2004 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 25756    I'm not sure...I do that actually and especially when I'm excited or nervous...my brain qill think too fast and words will come out of my mouth too fast for me to think.....Hmm....

Date: 1/19/2004 11:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 57579    I think he'll eventually grow out of it. I mean he's 2 1/2 hasnt been talking all that long. But you could probably enroll him in a speech program if you think that would help *hugs*
Date: 1/19/2004 11:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 58334    I stutter a bit, but that's only because I'm a fast talker and then words come out faster then I mean them too
Date: 1/19/2004 11:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    Not everyone grows out of it , but there are some who do. My son stuttered some when he was little, but he grew out of it before he went to school. He is an adult now and the stuttering never came back.
Date: 1/19/2004 11:25:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    Thank you Posey, thats great to know. I know everyone doesn't grow out of it but its great to hear theres that possibility and that it has been done.
Date: 1/19/2004 11:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 14754    my daughter stuttered when she was young as well..i was very concerned and took her to a hearing and speach specialist..they told me that it was nothing to worry about and that she will grow out of it...which she did..
Date: 1/19/2004 11:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 27046    My son does that when he is overly excited about something. My daughter has little tolerance and tells him to spit it out quite often..LOL. It's only when he is excited though!

Date: 1/19/2004 12:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    Personally I don't find it very funny to make fun of people with stuttering problems...it embarrasses them enough let alone have people make fun of them on top of it. Thanks everyone for all your replies.
Date: 1/19/2004 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    I started stuttering from my first words. I still stutter today. I believe though that the way to make it better is to help them learn how to breathe properly because stuttering occurs when we don't breathe properly and we rush our words. I bet you your nephew is an excitable little fella too. If you cab get him to slow down you may see some results. If he is still stuttering then take him to a speech pathologist and also help him at home by teaching him to sing. Singing helps you to learn how to breathe when your talking. Hope everything works out!
Date: 1/19/2004 2:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 51587    Some ppl stutter and some dont..my stepdads sister has a stutterin problem..she was fine..but then one year it got bad and each year it has gotten badder then before...but i dont ever notice it anymore tho until someone meations it *huggs*
Date: 1/19/2004 3:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 19875    I stuttered when I wast younger, and it was the same sort of thing, I'd repeat words over and over again. I went to speech therapy from kindergarten to grade three and it went away. But recently it's actually been making a comeback, now when I'm tired or really excitied I'll say things like "Well it's not like he meant meant meant to do it". My little sister on the other hand had a stutter until she was five years old, then it was gone.
Date: 1/19/2004 3:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    Kurt...my mother spoke to someone she works with at a school that deals with this and she said basically the same thing you did. We were told not to make it a big deal but to talk to him a little slower and sing it. Also, that it could be a result from his younger brother who is 3 1/2 months old and that there is jealousy and he's trying to get attention by talking faster. Thanks so much for your reply hubby. *HUGS*

Date: 1/19/2004 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    WOW, I was surprised and happy to see this topic! My grandson who will be three in July has started doing the same thing. I encourage him to speak slower but it doesn't help. His younger brother who is two goes to speech therapy because he does not talk enough at his age. Nathan also is a very bright child and has a great vocabulary for his age. I recently brought this to the attention of the speech therapist. She said that at this age, they sometimes just sometimes get ahead of themselves especially if excited to tell you something. She said if it gets worse he will need to see her as well. She however said that most children do outgrow it and also to encourage them to speak slower.
Date: 1/19/2004 8:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    We heard that it usually happens between the ages of 3 and 5. But being my nephew is advanced for his age thats why it happened sooner. Thanks for your reply Bee. =)
Date: 1/27/2004 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    I wasn't suggesting that anyone pick on someone who stutters. My son doesn't have a stuttering problem, he gets ahead of himself when he is excited about something. Siblings will pick on one another, and that it what they do, pick on and at each other....CONSTANTLY.
Date: 9/17/2005 12:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I only stutter when all the ideas are rushing around my brain and I'm thinking too fast.
Date: 9/18/2005 3:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58078    Thanks Amers....actually my nephew just turned 4 now this past July and he doesn't have that problem anymore. Not like it was. Thanks for the reply
