Need Some Advice on How to Handle this situation ~~Angeleyez~~

Hi all. I have a situation going on here that I just don't know how to handle anymore. Ok, here goes: The 3rd shift person is supposed to come in 10 min early everyday to be briefed on what is going on that day and get all the information from me. After I brief her, I am supposed to hand over my workstation to her and then wait until my designated time to leave an go home. Well at least 4 out of the 5 days we work, she comes in anywhere from 5-10 min late. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but we don't get paid overtime unless it's in 15 min. incriments. So I'm working anywhere from 30-40 extra minutes a week without pay. Anyway, I have spoken to the supervisor about this numerous times and everytime he says something to her, she will be on time for about a week and go back to her old ways.

Here's where the problem comes in. Right before Christmas, I was working EXTREMELY sick. I had the flu and had NO voice whatsoever. I was whispering literally. This might not seem like a big deal, but I'm a 911 operator. Could you imagine calling in with an emergency and you can barely hear the person who answered. Anyway, that just happened to be the one day that she came in 9 minutes early!! So I got all my things together and was going to leave when she got an attitude and blocked the door claiming that I was not able to leave because she wasn't "ready" to work yet and she still had 9 min to go. Yes, she technically was right, but I was sick and ill. Needless to say, I said some very non-G rated things and ended up suspended for 3 days and had to apologize to her. Well now she's going back to her old "late" self again, and I don't know what to do about it. I'm really tired of talking to the supervisors because all they do is tell her "Don't do it again." I've already taken this as high as I can (THe Chief of Police). I have all the days documented and yet they don't do anything to her. Do you guys have any suggestions, other than finding another job? Thanks a bunch.

Date: 1/13/2004 10:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 26598    other than quiting, you could find some, bad habit that would annoy her as much as her coming in late. You could, well, gargle mouth wash while shes there, clip your toe nails while on the phone, and try talking to her without blinking, a kinda droning stare.
I have a similar problem at work. If being a slob is not worth managements notice. Fight a slob with slobery.

If something is not done then that means their not doing there jobs as supervisors by not taking the right course of action. Someone in the station has to have the right idea for good work ethics. Good luck, Matt aka
Date: 1/14/2004 1:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 13897    what happens if you just leave at your normal time? i mean, it's her fault if she is late. you shouldn't be penalized for her irresponsibility.
Date: 1/14/2004 7:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 17275    Let her know you have a life and responsibilities outside work too and that you find her lateness disrespectful and inconsiderate and that you are keeping a log of her tardies to be passed on to the higher ups. Maybe she will think twice about it.
Date: 1/14/2004 8:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 58611    Well I would add that fifteen mins to your time sheet every time she is more than 5 mins late. And mention it to her that "they" are keeping a log of her tardiness. Dont say who or details, just let that slip to her. She may just be one of those chronically late people, and it may be hard to find another person who will work 3rd shift so they just let it slide as long as she is actually there every day. There really isnt anything else you can do. Practice some meditation around the time for her to come in so you dont get so upset. Just try to relax and understand that not everyone is geared the same way. I know it sucks though.
Date: 1/14/2004 8:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    Instead of talking to her supervison, write him every time that she is late. Keep copies of all the letters that you write. After you have a dozen or so, then make copies of them and forward them to your supervisors supervisor with a letter that basically states that this is a pattern of behavior that hasn't changed and your supervisor seems unable to deal with it. That will pretty much get you some action. Bob
Date: 1/14/2004 9:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    If you already have a log of all the times she was late go to the supervisor and explain that you are going to be going to the labour relation board over this issue. Keep track of when you talked to your supervisors and then take all documentation to the LRB.
