Never call. Go in person. A good place to start is your local Job Service office. Good luck! |

I happen to be holding job interviews where I work and this is what I find to be most impressive...first of all do not call anyone who isn't advertising for someone to hire. If you want to fill out an aplication somewhere that isn't advertising that's cool. Just go in looking good and ask for an aplication but do not call out of the blue. When you call someone who IS looking to hire simply ask when is the best time to come in to fill out an aplication. Show interest but do not waiste a lot of phone time asking questions. When you go in to fill out the application, dress well but not over dressed. It depends on what the business is your applying for. Dress like you would be going to work there. ie dress clothes for an office job or slacks and blouse for retail etc. Be polite and courteous to whom ever you meet at this place. Even if it is obvious the person handing out the application is not the one who will be doing the hiring. Make an impression by shaking hands and introducing yourself with whom ever gives you the application. Be professional, friendly and confidant. Don't go in looking desperate to work or over anxious. Fill out the application COMPLETELY. Do not leave any blanks, it makes you look lazy and incompetant. Even if the question does not apply to you, answer "does not apply". This is the most important part of filling out an application and really will make a difference as to whether you get the job or not. Write neatly and clearly. Finally, thank the person you hand the application in to and say "I hope to hear from you soon". When you get called for an interview, shake hands with the interviewer and introduce yourself. After the interviewer asks his or her questions to determine if you are employable, be prepared with questions of your own. Show an interest in the place you are applying for. Be honest. If you don't have all the qualifications they are looking for, tell them that you are a fast learner but do not make yourself look desperate and unrealistic. Be calm and remember you will not get every job you interview for. Shake hands when you leave, look the interviewer in the eyes and say "thank you for your time". The most important thing is to make a possitive impression by giving a sense of responsibility, maturity, confidence and friendliness. Good Luck. |

Oh and never call to see if you got the job. At the interview ask when they expect to hire someone. If they say two days and two days go by without hearing anything, then you didn't get the job. Calling and asking puts them on the spot where they have to give you the bad news and no one likes that feeling. If you don't hear from them then you can assume you did not get the job. |

Always go in person when looking for applications/job interviews. Never show up in jeans/sweats, etc. Even if you are just going to McDonalds. Even a dress casual is best for that sort of thing. Such as black dress slacks, white shirt, blazer, etc. Never call to see if you got the job, let them call you. Do ask at the interview at what point you can expect to possibly hear something. Another thing you may want to consider is a temp agency...if you're good at secretarial skills, and like that kind of thing. Not only do you get variety, but it can also lead to permanent placement, or you could get in with a company that would pay for schooling, etc. Good places to go for jobs would be: fast food, family restaurants (hostess jobs are good), grocery stores (I dealt with being a cashier, I survived), if you're good with fashion, perhaps the Dress Barn, Fashion Bug, etc..where you'd get to help the customer more with choices....if you can handle talking on the phone and being hung up on, I've heard that telemarketing is a good way to make money, movie theaters are good, check your local newspapers, go by word of mouth, and also see if you have any local on-line job searches available. Good luck, and happy job-hunting! --Christine-3 |

well first off, go in person, make sure you have atleast three references, always be prepared. it depends on where you go to apply, if it is fast food/restaurant ...that time would be fine, do not go in the morning if they have breakfast, mid day would be fine, not at lunch, and not at dinner. just remember do not go when they are busy. dress to impress, do not wear something too showy, you know? but do not go in wearing baggy pants and an oversized t-shirt...good luck! Always smile!! |

I also would recommend removing multiple piercings and covering tattoos. Don't wear strong perfume or cologne and make sure you pop in a breath mint before facing anyone. Good hygiene is a given and easy on the makeup. No short dresses/shirts or low in the front. Otherwise don't be anxious to show skin. Oh, and make sure you have a pen with you. Be prepared. Good luck! |
