My youngest son, who’s seven, was having a restless night. So, I knelt by his bed and rubbed in circular movements on his temple, just as my Mum used to with me when I was younger.
Then, in a soothing voice, I put a very calming picture in his mind…
You’re walking through a meadow on a hot, summer day. The air is fresh and there is not a cloud in the sky. You come to a big tree at the edge of a wood and sit under it for a bit of shade. You can still feel the warmth of the sun. All around you are beautiful looking flowers. They also smell beautiful. You can hear the faint hum of bees pollinating the flowers and the sound of birds chirping. You can hear the fain rustle of the leaves from the trees swaying in a gentle breeze. In the distance, you can hear the trickle of water flowing along a small stream. You feel happy here and very relaxed. You close your eyes and feel that your arms are beginning to relax, followed by your hands and fingers. Your legs start to relax and so do your feet and toes. You’re eyes feel heavier and soon, you’re drifting off into a comfortable sleep…
Thinking he must have been at least relaxed by this, I stopped.
He opened his eyes and said, “Yeah, whatever!”
