Carena, I know what your going through cuz I went through the same thing. I had an old country dentist who suggested a remedy. When the swelling goes down a bit, chew gum. The pressure of the gum against the extracted area eases the pain eventually and toughens the gum tissue. Give the extraction time to heal first, then try the gum. Sounds crazy but it is also a clean way to remove food particles that find their into the cavity. Even when a socket is partially healed it can become infected. The food particles can cause an infection in the wounded area.Your dentist will repack the socket, let him. Then ask him if what I'm telling you meets with his approval. A dry socket seems to take forever to heal. But its worth it to eleminate the pain of one or more wisdom teeth that are impacted. I suffered with impacted wisdom teeth for years before deciding to have mine pulled. The relief is worth the treatment. I'm pulling for your speedy recovery. I hope you get feeling better soon. ttfn |

I had three teeth removed at once last year and luckily I didnt end up with dry socket..Did you rinse after you ate for the first few days?? Also you have to keep your mouth as clean as possible and keep the area moist. They also tell you not to smoke while your mouth is healing, but I still did *sheepish grin*..I was lucky. |

Yes, I did...and the surgeon who did my dental work (all four wisdom teeth were impacted) I had I think two dry sockets, both on the bottom, he used some kind of packing material of gauze dipped in something that was so nasty tasting (tasted like cloves)--yuck. He also gave me a plastic syringe (like a baby's medicine dispenser) with a curved tip, and said to clean the area several times daily with a mixture of 1 part listerine to 2 parts warm water to help prevent further infection. Do you know if your dentist packed the area with gauze or not? I think its supposed to keep food and the like from getting in, but then you have the listerine rinse to flush it out. He also said be very gentle when brushing for awhile...as the gumline will be tender. Ice on the face to ease the swelling. Ibuprophen or Tylenol will also help the pain, ease the swelling (unless you got lucky like I did and got a prescription pain med). Stick mostly to foods that don't require a lot of chewing and are of say 'casual' temperature... soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, I was able to manage grilled cheese sandwiches without the crust, I think I was able to eat tuna salad/chicken salad, the ever-popular jell-o LOL, milkshakes (take a carnation shake, add milk and ice cream to the blender, this way you get your nutrients plus a treat...my favorite is to get the vanilla shakes, but add chocolate syrup and peanut butter to it...or add orange sherbert with the vanilla ice cream, kinda like a creamcicle). If you want some more advice, I'll be thinking of it, so you can message me privately if you want...other than that, just hang in there, and I hope you feel better. If you want more info on that listerine tip, you may want to phone your dentist on the actual percentages, but I think thats the right thing. You can buy the syringes at any drugstore, just look up by the pharmacy end where they have all the pill cases and funny baby spoons and stuff. Good luck to you. --Christine-3 |
