~~He Sits; A Soldier in the Line of Defense~~

In a dark corner
In a faraway land
In the middle of no where
He sits; rifle in hand

Artillery fire lights up the sky above
Gunfire heard not too far in the distance
Dust covered flooring all around
He sits; a soldier in the line of defense

Attuned to the present situation
Thoughts running through his mind
In a rare moment of silence through the night
He kneels; silently praying for all mankind

Another soldier arrives in relief
As the dawning hours draw near
The long night has come to a close
He sleeps; lost in dreams he holds dear

Twinkling lights decorating homes and lawns
Carolers heard singing door to door
Fresh powdery snow covering the ground
He dreams; happy memories before the war

Christmas morning at home with his family
Lovingly within his arms he holds his wife
Wonderful smiles he sees on his children's faces
He dreams; beautiful moments held so dear in his life

His dreams come to an end
As the day turns to dusky skies
With the sounds of the war close at hand
He awakens; tears in his eyes

He prepares himself for the situation at hand
With the visions from his dreams tucked away with care
Into the night he goes, pausing briefly in thought
He kneels; for peace on earth he quietly says a prayer

Securing his post for night watch once again
The rights and freedoms of mankind he serves to protect
Fighting in a faraway land; in the middle of no where
He sits; a soldier in the line of defense, deserving of all respect

weeks of no sleep, late night raids....and always
thinking about home.)"
