'Dead' Man Comes Back to Life at Funeral Home

SANTA FE, N.M. (Reuters) - A New Mexico funeral home owner received the surprise of his career when a man pronounced dead at a hospital came back to life just before he was to be embalmed.

Russell Muffley, the owner of Muffley Funeral Home in Clovis, New Mexico, said he noticed Felipe Padilla breathing when the man pronounced dead at a hospital was being transferred to his facility on Wednesday. Padilla, 94, was rushed back to the same hospital, but did not recover. He was declared dead for a second time.

"When we were getting ready to move him from the stretcher to the embalming table, we noticed signs of life," Muffley said.

Padilla was breathing on his own but not speaking when paramedics took him from the funeral home back to Plains Regional Medical Center. He died a few hours later and was taken back to the funeral home, where arrangements had already been made.

Padilla will be buried next week.

"I have been doing this for 39 years and this has never happened before," Muffley said.

Date: 1/5/2004 7:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 57115    This isnt all that uncommon...There is a disease, i forget what its called but your brain kind of goes into hibernation. You dont breathe, eat, drink or anything. And you can wake up months later.
Date: 1/5/2004 8:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I bet those employees and family will have dreams about this for years.
Date: 1/5/2004 8:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    that is pretty strange...it would be horrible to be embalmed when you're still alive, and wake up :S scary stuff

Date: 1/5/2004 8:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 62222    There is a form of Epilepsy that does this to you as well. You have a seizure and all your functions shut down and you appear dead and there is no way to tell otherwise. There is one woman in the UK who has awoken 3 times in the city morgue because she had one of these seizures. Creepy stuff...<RegretfulHalo>
Date: 1/5/2004 9:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 62408    I've also heard that after a person does die, it takes time for all the systems of the body to shut down, and reflexes can occur, causing twitching, spasms, etc. Even on occasion, something that would appear to be breathing. Still, to be given back hope must be devastating. I've also heard of the conditions mentioned here. May that family find comfort, and may Mr. Padilla finally rest in peace, at 94, he deserves it. --Christine

Date: 1/8/2004 3:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 62135    I guess he couldn't decide to go or stay. But that is really odd. Never heard of that before. Thankx for sharing.
