Letter to Seventeen Magazine -Running Wolf-

Hey everyone. I got the February issue of Seventeen Magazine today, and in it contained a story about a girl in California who tried to start a Caucasian Club at her school. Needless to say, she has started quite a controversy and has taken a lot of heat because of this. Before I show you my letter to the editor of the magazine, let me tell you that this girl, Lisa McClelland, would have let anyone who was interested in this club into it. Despite it’s name, she was not being racist, because anyone was welcome to be a part of the club. Now onto my letter. Please let me know what you think; if there is anything that I should get rid of, since space is an issue if it is going to be put into the magazine. Thanks!

**************************

“Why is Everyone Calling Me a Racist?” in your February issue really angered me. Lisa McClelland had a wonderful idea for her school, and people turned it around to make her look like an evil racist person, which obviously she isn’t. How exactly is the inclusion of all students in the club being racist, or even discriminatory? Sure, the name of the club could give a bad impression to some, but what about all the organizations available for minorities in this country? The United States has organizations dedicated to all types of groups in this country, such as the Association of Hispanic Arts, Inc. (AHA), Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), United Negro College Fund, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, German American Foundation, or Miss White America; and see what happens. It boggles my mind why minorities are allowed to have organizations for their groups, many of which exclude Caucasians, but as soon as a majority group wants a union, it is considered discriminatory, prejudice, and racist. It’s time that America, a melting pot of cultures and ethnic groups, get over these unfair racial and ethnic double standards. Perhaps some of the activists who work so hard for the minorities to get an equal say in this country can work to help get the white people an equal voice too.

Date: 1/3/2004 1:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    *Claps Loudly* I dont know if its too long, but I sure hope they publish it. Whats sad is the fact that I am relpying to this post is enough proof to some that I am a racist.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Thanks, Scorpio Kev, I hope the post it in the magazine too. Thanks for replying.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    You're not a racist, DMK, but you're right. The fact that I wrote this and you're responding is enough for some people. Oh well, I am expecting some of those types of comments, but I know what I truely believe. Thanks for responding, and I'll let you and Kev know if they post it in the mag!
Date: 1/3/2004 1:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 56074    I agree with you too. When I read the article I thought that everyone took it way too far. She even said they would study other cultures because, I think she said she was Irish or Indian, I can't remember exactly.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 59861    didnt read the article, so i cant help, but if she dosnt want to seem racist, she should have named her club something else. peace n luv
Date: 1/3/2004 1:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 62503    my brother started one at his school 4 years ango and there was controversy at first but then everyone joined and they had a blast. but now that he left the school it hasnt been a club anymore
Date: 1/3/2004 1:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Lizzy, that was another point. She has so many different cultures mixed in her, that I think its irresponsible to call her racist. We'll see how far this letter goes. Thanks for replying
Date: 1/3/2004 1:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    62503, that's great that your brother did something like that, but it's a shame that it isn't there anymore since he left. Thanks for replying
Date: 1/3/2004 1:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Shady Lady, the reason why she kept the name for the club is because it is politcally charged and she wanted people to get over that. I don't think that she should have changed the name at all. Why be politically correct about that? If she would have been made to change the name of her club, then all the organizations listed in my letter should have been changed to be equally politically correct.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i've said it before and will say it again... the single white male gets the short end of the stick!
Date: 1/3/2004 1:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Funny, no one seems to scream "racist" at minority based and named organizations, but as soon as we have "The White Club", it's a problem. Why do minorities get away with things like that? Why is there such a racial double standard between the minorities and the majorities? Oh that right, when you're a minority, you become a victim of all the prejudice and segregation by the white people...
Date: 1/3/2004 1:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    You're exactly right Midnightly. Thanks for coming by and responding.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Oh, and I would like to say that I am not being racist at all! I am open to people of different races and cultures. This topic just angers me because of the double standard, and I feel very strongly about my opinions. I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone or if you all think I'm being racist, but that is not the case.
Date: 1/3/2004 2:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    GREAT letter.. I couldn't agree with you more.
Date: 1/3/2004 2:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 58030    people are trying to get higher up in the world, if that means holding something above some one else's head that happend to they're great great great great great grandfather, before they were even born.... who cares!!! get over it, but i agree that this school is really stupid and some of the stuff they did was so immature, ridiculous, i hope they post your letter!
Date: 1/3/2004 2:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Thanks, Rika!
Date: 1/3/2004 2:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Thanks for replying, Moon Storm!
Date: 1/3/2004 4:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I still think she was foolish in creating a club focused on a race at her school. In this case she just happened to get attention because it was called the "Caucasian Club", but any other club focused on race or ethnicity should not be allowed in public school. Public school should only have club that are based on academics, the arts, and possibly sports. Any other sort of club or organization should be held privatly; and in that case she would have the chance to exclude any race she wants.
Date: 1/3/2004 4:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    I agree with you Alien, but her group was NOT focused on one ethnicity, nor was she excluding anyone. She invited EVERYONE of ALL RACES to join if they wished. Also, her group wasn't the only group like that at her school. They have a Gay Student Alliance, and the Black Student Union. I don't understand why her group was singled out as racist while they have the BLACK STUDENT UNION! Holy hell, that is discriminatory against whites, Mexicans, Chinese, Indians, etc. That's the point that I was trying to make; this whole thing is a racial double standard.
Date: 1/3/2004 4:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    How could her club not be focused on ethnicity? It was called the "Caucasian Club". It's focused on ethnicity just as much as the Black Student Union. If it was focused on anything else it would have a different name. I understand why she did it, but it still doesn't make it right for anyone who has a club like that, no matter who they allow to join.
Date: 1/3/2004 4:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    This is my point, as soon as white person wants to start a club like this, everyone screams about it. Oh no, how politically incorrect. If we're going to make a stink about her poor judgement and how her club is racially segregated, then lets also attack organizations started by black people, and Hispanic Rights' Activists. Why is it so freakin terrible when a white person wants an organization for their own race? Other races do it, why can't we? Why are we the minority when it comes to this?
Date: 1/3/2004 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    Well I have always been opposed to racially based clubs, I remember there was a stupid one at the middle school I used to go to. It was called "The Hispanic Mother Daughter Club". Of course it was not exclusivly for a certain race, just named after it, but there were no white people in it. I would like to see an end to all clubs like this for everyone, clubs like these have no academic value and no place in school. Of course I feel the same about socially sponsered clubs that schools have like the National Honor Society, which despite popular belief is not only based on your grades.
Date: 1/3/2004 7:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    I agree with you there, Alien. Thanks for being so active in this discussion. LoL
Date: 1/3/2004 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    That is a great letter--send it in!! There isn't anything you should get rid of.

Date: 2/21/2004 4:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    ya, im late with this.. but i read your update about this, and i really think they should have a caucasian club at schools... they have one for asians, blacks and mexicans.. but none for white?? doesnt seem fair..
Date: 2/21/2004 8:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6860    Yup, that was my point SnowPrincess. Thanks for replying!
Date: 2/21/2004 9:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 62334    /claps loudly!! I agree with you 100%. Very very well written..
