Today my husband and I went shopping. At the checkout, the cashier got a funny look on her face as she scanned Danny's diet coke. She asked which one of us drank it then proceeded to tell him how dangerous it was and what happened to her brother after drinking it for a long time.

The ingredient that causes the problems is aspartame (Saccharin, Equal, Nutrasweet, Equal Measure etc...). It appears to cause slow, silent damage in those unfortunate enough to not have immediate reactions and a reason to avoid it. It may take one year, five years, 10 years, or 40 years, but it seems to cause some reversible and some irreversible changes in health over long-term use.

Maybe this is common knowledge and we somehow missed it. I just wanted to share the info with you guys just incase anyone it can help anyone.

Danny looked it up on the net when we got home and we were surprised to find out just how bad it really is. Danny doesn't drink diet coke often, but my mom does. I'm going print some info for her. We found several sites with the same information, so I'm inclined to believe it (I am still looking for more info, proof, etc...). Here are lists of some of the problems it causes and some of the diseases it mimics or worsens.

Many reactions to aspartame are very serious and include seizures and death.

Those reactions included:

Date: 1/2/2004 10:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    You're welcome. I use sweet n low a lot. I'm trying to find out now if it has aspartame in it.

Date: 1/2/2004 10:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 52337    My mom has drank Diet Coke for years... ever since she can remember. She has alot of these probelms. I'll get her to read this. Luv Alws, lizz
Date: 1/2/2004 10:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I drink Diet Dr. Pepper all the time, and I use Equal as a sweetener. I always heard that apartame was much safer than Saccharin which is in Sweet and Low. It seems like I've read something on snopes about it being an urban legend that equal was so dangerous.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp
Date: 1/2/2004 10:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    Thanks Dreamer. That makes me feel a lot better. Especially since it's coming from a professional. We've done searches on and off since we heard this yesterday morning and we couldn't find anything positive about it. That's why I believed it. I feel somewhat stupid right about now LOL.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    Don't feel stupid Just remember...if it was really THAT dangerous there's no way the FDA would allow it to be on the shelves....i mean look at Ephedra
Date: 1/2/2004 10:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    Thanks Snookums. I'm relieved to find out that it isn't true. I usually don't automatically believe stuff like this, but I was really worried.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    Good point, Dreamer. That's one of the things that really confused me. The link I posted even gave an explination as to why it was eventually approved. I usually laugh at people who fall for stuff like this...now, they can laugh back lol.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 3688    *hugs* well....lol i'm just glad ya cared enough to post it fake or not
Date: 1/2/2004 10:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    i know it's baaad for you! that's why you should use Splenda. it doesn't have harmful ingredients like that. =)
Date: 1/2/2004 10:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Hey don't feel bad. I once read an article about the many dangers of Canola Oil online, and I was so freaked out. I was ready to toss mine in the garbage when I found out it was just an urban legend. This false information is everywhere, its confusing to know whats true and whats not.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 45397    I don't drink diet coke or eat diet stuff but I have some of these problems =P
Date: 1/2/2004 10:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    I'm sorry that you are having problems, Wyndrune. I think most people probably have at least one of the "symptoms". I think that's what scared me the most.
Date: 1/2/2004 10:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 52337    i think coke is even worse
Date: 1/2/2004 10:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 22275    that would explain alot... im addicted to diet soda and i have a seve combination of anxiety and depression. I also have chronic stomach problems and a severe phobia of wind and rain. im gonna take it out of my diet and see if i can reverse the mental issues. thank you for posting this it would really explain alot for me.
Date: 1/2/2004 11:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 52337    i think its great that you have told people this so they can save there life.im very proud of ur husband cause he stopped.

Date: 1/2/2004 11:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    Ive read articles on aspartame that say it's perfectly healthy, everything opposite from this article. So who knows what to believe. Unfortunatly, even everyday pesticides and chemicals used on fruits and vegetables now can cause all of these reactions. EVERYTHING (even breathing because of pollution) can cause death. It's a sad sad world.
Date: 1/3/2004 12:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    Sitting here with sugar-free Koolade. Fridge has Fresca in it and usually Diet Coke. Being a diabetic, using sugar can cause it's share of problems too. Awhile back I had a sonogram on my back which showed non-functioning tumors on my adrenal glands which sit on top of the kidneys. My question is, if I have non-functioning tumors in my body do I have functioning ones as well? I would drink diet pop before I would eat a tomato from a garden that I knew had been sprayed.
Date: 1/3/2004 12:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 51587    hmmm..scary..my real dad and uncle drinks diet pop all the time...my uncle can drink an 12 pack an day....hmm thank for sharin, glad i dont like diet.think its nasty. *huggs*
Date: 1/3/2004 12:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 62181    All this just makes me ask myself, "WHAT WON'T KILL ME????" seems like anything is 'bad' for you. I just eat and drink what makes me happy at least when I die I will know I enjoyed what I wanted to in life!
Date: 1/3/2004 12:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 60992    Those symptons can mean anything there's too many to know for certain if it's made you sick.

Date: 1/3/2004 1:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    Wow, that's interesting. I have heard that diet sodas were a lot worse than regular sodas. I've been drinking diet sodas for a while now. But I'm trying to drink more water instead.
Date: 1/3/2004 1:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    i can understand some people having reations to it... just like some people are allergic to simple things like APPLES and ORANGES i think more of us need to listen to our bodies... but it is good to know alotta this stuff and to take it to heart and not overdose on the stuff(just like everything else... in moderation)
Date: 1/3/2004 3:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 5061    Hmmmmm, this don't sound none to swift,i've used "sweet and low"for years, and drink the diet drinks.I need to talk with my Doc,about this one.thanks, jeanie/
Date: 1/3/2004 4:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Thanks Big Time for sharing this info Apryl. I use Sweet N Low and
nutrisweet but will try to find something else for the sweet taste I crave.

Date: 1/3/2004 7:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 60052    I think it may be the soda in general along with the artificial flavors and preservatives that cause a lot of these problems. My doctor has me on a very strict diet because of some serious health problems I've been having. Since eating only completely natural foods and beverages with absolutely no additives, most of my symptoms have subsided. I'm allergic to Red dye #40, MSG, and many other additives (too many to list here). So I have to make all my meals at home so I know exactly what is in them. No prepackaged food of any kind.
Date: 1/3/2004 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I probably have over half of those symptoms and I never drink or eat anything diet or sugar free..lol..
Date: 1/3/2004 7:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    Dreamer and Snookums stole my answer. I use it constantly and I am fine
Date: 1/3/2004 9:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 42259    Wow the list goes on and on doesn't it? I heard recently that it causes cancer but I didn't know about all this other stuff.Scary, huh?
Date: 1/3/2004 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 54968    OMG! I never knew this! Thanks for posting this!
Date: 1/3/2004 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 62408    Thanks snookums.. I read, also, on snopes about it being an 'urban legend'. Granted, there is some truth to the matter...some people DO have a sensitivity to it.. There was I time when I couldn't get it, because aspartame/nutra-sweet whatever you want to call it, is one of the triggers for migraines, but it doesn't effect me anymore. But I drink diet soda regularly without problem now. I agree with all the others. If it were all that dangerous, there's no way the FDA would allow the product to be on the shelf. I don't know what I'd do without my daily dose of diet soda! LOL.
Date: 1/3/2004 8:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    aye yi yi...until my doctor actually tells me to quit drinking it I ain't giving up my diet sodas..
Date: 1/4/2004 8:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 34865    I think its good that you posted this. I was taught never to drink or eat that stuff because my mom knew that it causes cancer, and thats reason enough for me.
Date: 1/4/2004 1:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 6003    Yep. I have a friend who was/is a heavy diet coke drinker. She got really sick and had all the symptoms of MS, went thru a bunch of tests at John Hopkins, but they coulden't figure out what was wrong with her. She has to take medication for dizziness every day, but continues to drink diet soda. Don't drink/eat anything with aspartame, it is poison!
Date: 1/4/2004 7:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    Thanks for the comments everyone. Even though this seems to be an urband legend, it does cause cancer in rats from what I understand (that might not be true either though). Like Michelle said, "seems like everything is "bad" for you these days.
Date: 1/5/2004 5:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    ok and for those who say that everything is bad nowadays.. that is just a scapegoat for unhealthy behavior.
Date: 1/5/2004 11:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 38119    I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of this because I have drunk diet sodas, but my opinion has changed. A couple of days ago, I drank several(about 5) glasses of diet Crush, and one glass shortly before I went to bed. The next morning I felt awful; I was nauseous and even threw up twice. I wonder if it was the apartame.
Date: 6/26/2004 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 51456    WOW! ur joking! thats nothing to joek about though. thats very serous... i dont drink too much of colas sodas and stuff mostly because my dad said they are unhelahty btu i didn't belive it until i saw proof .. i geuss ills top sneaking it.. thanks!
Date: 6/27/2004 5:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36901    I wasn't joking. I thought it was true. Turns out, it's a hoax.
Date: 12/10/2005 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I like..water.
