  Author:  15675  Category:(Religious) Created:(12/31/2003 10:38:00 PM)

History/Founder/ important persons/saints: Kemet is a religion of recent but unclear origin. It is an attempt to reconstruct ancient religious practices of Kemet (Egypt), in as much of a pure form as possible. Kemetic belief is Monolatrous- that is, they believe, like the ancients, that there is only one supreme God, who manifests in many aspects as the minor deities.

Current leader/governing body: Varies- many groups have formed and incorporated by consensus, but there is no central organization, and many solitary believers.

Number of Adherents: Unknown.

Clergy: Varies, depending on the group.

Requirements to join: None, membership is open in most groups to anyone interested, although some require an initiation.

Scripture: Traditional Egyptian writings, most notably the Book of the Dead.

Required observances, dietary restrictions: Vary widely.

Basic teachings and Beliefs: Beliefs and practices vary from group to group, but generally follow known Egyptian practice. The concept of Ma'at, or divine justice (similar to the Eastern philosophy of Karma), is a guiding principle.
