t h e u n r a v e l/ Chapter two:
Timberlake, Wisconsin- January llth, l990:
"we'll come again, next thursday afternoon- the in-law's hope they'll see you very soon- but is in your conscience that your after, another glimpse of the Madman Across the Water.............."
They settled in, became part of the small community of Timberlake, and each member of the Sterling family made their mark- in no time flat. No-one could imagine the horror that awaited their cozy existence in the little corner of the world, James Allen Sterling seemingly handpicked for his family.
Timberlake, Wisconsin was more than a one-horse town, but not by much. There were a couple of convenience stores, a couple of popular taverns, seven churches, two elementary schools, a jr. high school, a high school, a business college, one McDonalds, one KFC, a couple of family-owned restaurants, a Dairy Queen, a few baseball diamonds, a couple of lovers-lanes, a bowling alley, One movie plaza that showed three somewhat new movies at any given time, a police station (along with six officers, one detective, and one head honcho- the Chief), a Motel-6 near Interstate 40, an Economy Lodge, one campground, a VFW lodge, a Fraternal Order of the whatevers, a bingo hall, and if someone drove a few miles outside of Timberlake- they could find Tri-County Speedway. That's it, the line-up of Timberlake, Wisconsin and what it offers. There are your usual array of business's, but it's the small town USA that it wants to represent. The older folks of Tri-County doesn't have any desire for the town of Timberlake to get any bigger- any sooner than destiny would have it.
When a family such as the Sterling clan moves into a town, such as Timberlake, they turn heads, especially when it happens to be such an attractive family. The Sterling home was short of spectacular. The vehicles they drove didn't come from buy-here, pay-here lots. The clothes they wore weren't from any store whose title ended in "Mart". However in defense of the Sterling family, although their high up-keep seemed to be a mystery, there was not an air about them. Their personalities and mannerism's weren't condescending or pretentious, and if hatred and bitterness fueled the Sterlings, no-one could sense it or envision it as well. They appeared in tact, they seemed to be very happy as a family, and no-one could find the preverbial dirt under any rug that adorned their home. So, as far as it was known- all was fine in Sterling-ville. But it was fiction in the making, hiding behind those expensive doors that shut behind their every move, pretty is as pretty does................
It started with the discovery of Anna Marie Sterling, l6-years old, laying dead in a pool of blood- which soaked and drenched the white carpet of her immaculate bedroom. Even the teddy bears that lay next to her lifeless body had been dyed red from the horrendous attack that she had endured at the hands of her killer. Then there was the pathetic phone call to 9ll- by her l8-year old brother- Dylan Lane Sterling, who was only trying to locate his sister to relay messages from the phone calls he had been intercepting for a couple of hours. "Oh my God, my sister's dead!", he screamed as the 9ll-operator tried to make sense of it all. "Your sister's dead? Are you sure?", the woman on the other end of the line querried. "Her room is covered in blood, her throat has been slashed, she's not breathing. PLEASE HELP! OH MY GOD! ANNA-ANNA"! With that gutwrenching plea for help- the phone reciever hit the floor with a deafening thud and in the silence of his dead sisters bedroom- the voice of the 9ll-dispatcher could be heard calling for Dylan, "Sir, are you there? Sir- Sir?" He sobbed as he held Anna's limp hand, as if he were just comforting her.
Just like that, the unravel had begun. Just that fast- tragedy set in for a long visit.............
