I don't know what Lutherans believe, I'm LDS, but I think it's awesome that your family is trying to find a religion that is right for them. Princess Rhiannon |

prodistents just believe in god.they read the bible and stuff.the only thing is its not like a catholic church were they pray to all different saints and have prayers that you have to memorize and stuff.you ONLY pray to god/jesus cuz it says only pray to one god and dont pray to anything or anyone els. You dont have to go to comunions or anything and have ceremonies you go to church have juses in your heart read from the bible. There isnt restrictions either you can do what you want you can marry were you want you can serve at weddings that arent in prodistent churches i think if your catholic you can only serve in a weddings that r in catholic churches you can get married out of a prodistent churches you dont have to get married at your church.its really good i think my church is kind of boring but they do have good messages there. |

the Lutheran Church did start out a part of the Catholic Church, until a Priest named Martin Luther protested what he viewed as the unfairness, and corruption of the Catholic Church. Lutherans believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born without sin, to a Virgin Mother. That he remained sinless throughout his life, and died upon the cross for all of Man's (and Woman's) sins, past & future. They believe in Divine Creation, and Biblical fact. Lutherans also place HUGE emphasis on "Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself", and "do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You". You are expected to follow the Ten Commandments, & pray to God, to communicate with him. |

BTW-I was raised a German-Lutheran, and my children (all three) were baptized Lutheran (Missouri-Synod) |

I was also raised a German Lutheran, though in an American Synod church (ALC). Lutheranism is one of the first Protestant churches (if not THE first), and they have a lot of practices similar to Catholics (like the communion ceremony). The main difference is that they don't follow a Pope or pray to saints or the Virgin Mary (at least we didn't). When I was going to church, our church would share services with a Catholic church down the street, and vice versa. I remember a lot of emphasis on "love thy neighbor," as LSG said, and NO putting down of other sects or religions. My memories of it were pretty good, though I'm not Lutheran now. |

It kind of depends on what kind of Lutheran church, too. Wisconsin Synod is a more conservative, fundamentalist branch. The American and Wisconsin Synods broke off from each other some time in the early 1900's all over Wisconsin, and my grandmother said that it was a pretty heated feud. In almost every small town in Wisconsin, you'll see the two churches standing within a few blocks of each other. I think they're more friendly with each other now. |

Wow! Canoe, thank you for the History. I know that my Grandpa was originally born in Wisconsin (near Spooner), and my Grandma, from Chicago, was German Lutheran. Now, I know something happened (about 1959-1960), where my Grandparents left the Lutheran Church and became Episcopilans (sp??). My parents remained Lutherans until about 1980. But, I was baptised & confirmed Lutheran, so I did the same for my children. I wonder if my family splitting off from the church had to do with the story your Grandma told you. After all, it would be the same area, I would think. |

Yeah, my dad (from Sheboygan, WI) was a Norwegian Lutheran, and my mom was a German Lutheran from East Prussia (Evangelische Kirche), though I grew up with the Bible, the Dhama Pada (Buddhist writings), and the Bhagavad Gita (Hindu scripture) all sitting on the same shelf in our house. Both my mom and dad said I could choose any religion I wanted, so it wasn't a strict upbringing. The Lutherans I knew seemed pretty laid back, too. |
