IF you are or become ill with this Flu this year, STAY HOME! I found out that the manager at the local fast food place I ate at last night handled my food and is ill with this flu. This does not upset ME much, BUT I DO have a VERY small baby. And so help me if he gets sick because I do from her........grrrr. I called there to talk to the manager of the morning shift, and low and behold, SHE answered the phone! Great. I hung up. I'm not about to place a complaint about her to her. I need her boss. So instead, I call another chain in a close by town. This manager CHEWED ME OUT for saying I wanted to complain about this! I could not believe it! So, I gathered my thoughts and called the public health department. BINGO! She will not be working for a while. Thank you very much. My son was too young to get a flu shot this year and now WI is out of it. BUT I put him on the waiting list for the vaccine as soon as they can get more. He is at high risk. I don't care if I were still just married with no children and got this flu, but now I am a mommy. My eyes are more open to this than ever before.. Did you know that this year the flu got worse and is killing babies here? Hence why I called public health. If you get this flu, no matter where you are, stay home. There are MILLIONS of tiny babies right now everywhere in the world. Stop thinking of yourselves and think of them. Would you care if your flu killed a baby? I would. Think about the mothers like me who do the best they can for their babies. Do you want them to be sick and spread it to the baby? I wouldn't. Just please. This and every flu season, get vaccinated. And if you do become ill, please. STAY HOME! We should all know better. Do not go out in public, especially a fast food or any food place and serve your public. Get a grip.

Date: 12/29/2003 10:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    PS... I always quit if I was told to come in sick, because I was just working on break between college and it wasn't worth me getting everyone else sick.
Date: 12/29/2003 10:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    UNfortunately a lot of places don't care if you are sick or not. When I had to work in retail they would say "Come in sick or don't come back!" And if that is the person's only source of income, then they really don't have a choice. I think what we need to do is reform the way certain management treats their employees.
Date: 12/29/2003 10:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 58611    AMEN to that!
Date: 12/29/2003 10:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 30051    Where my husband works they make you go in sick, but you have to wear gloves and a face mask. Kinda wierd if ya ask me.
Date: 12/29/2003 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 17275    OMG people please use your brains, don't go to work with the flu or even a bad cold! Especially people in the food service business!!!
Date: 12/29/2003 10:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    Employers have no sympathy when it comes to being sick and taking off work. This really irks me especially in the food industry. If you don't have sick leave or vacation forget it. My friend is a nurse and she has to wear a mask as she has a bad cough since having the flu since after Thanksgiving. I don't think this is enough, but that's all they require. I think it is good when I hear of schools closing when they have a mass amount of students and teachers down sick. I wish people who have sick kids in day care would keep them home. I remember when my children were young and they caught whatever was going around. It is just a lose-lose situation.
Date: 12/29/2003 10:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    I agree...then I don't....I mean really there are so many out there right now who think they have a cold and go shopping cough and spread all their nasty germs around. If your sick and working around food...definatly stay home...but to tell people to confine themselfs is unrealistic....I had the flu...but guess what? it was the week of my finals and the week before some finals so I had NO choice but to go out....but that is not to say I was handling anyones food or breathing on them....
Date: 12/29/2003 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    how'd you find out he/she had the flu anyhow?
Date: 12/29/2003 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    PPS I got my shot this year as I do every year and have gotten 3 head colds anyway. The shot doesn't always protect against every kind of bug
Date: 12/29/2003 10:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    did you find out about the flu (Still kinda wondering how LOL) BEFORE you ate and continued to eat or after you ate?
Date: 12/29/2003 11:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 57579    Couldnt have said it better myself. *hgus*
Date: 12/29/2003 12:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 25183    I agree with Becky. Sometimes people do not have a choice. You are at risk everytime you leave the house, so if you are that concerned why don't you stay in.
Date: 12/29/2003 12:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 5252    i understand completely, but as someone who works in fast food, when you are in management they really do not care. you are there or you have no job. that is the case. my store manager has been sick for about two months now, i do not want to be around it, but she is made to work, our district manager told her that she has to come in, but she can just sit in the office all day, waist of time yes! Sometimes you can not help it...but i do see your point.
Date: 12/29/2003 1:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    it's horrible when people come in sick... but you do also got to think about the fact you are most contagious during the few days(up to a week) before the symptons really hit you(aka the very begining of the flu) it also grustrates me to no end when people take little precautions NOT to spread the flu or a horrid cold once they have it
Date: 12/29/2003 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 53013    I am sooo with you on this. The other day my hubby and I went out to dinner, placed our order and the waitress that took our order left...end of her shift, well the one that carried out our food was coughing all over it. Needless to say, we left hungry. I think we will be eating at home for the cold and flu season.
Date: 12/30/2003 6:05:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29532    Becky, my friend is her best friend. She called and told me how sick she and her son are because she hung out with her for 4 hours. Her son has a temp of 104. It will not go down no matter what she does.
Date: 9/28/2004 10:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    I can't believe you got a manager in trouble for working while she was ill. For all you know, she might have been fired because of your call. She probably was forced to work by her boss. I agree with staying home to prevent spreading the flu but not everyone knows what they have and not everyone has the LUXURY of sick time. Some companies fire employees who miss work. You should've placed your concern with their corporation about forcing employees to work while ill but reporting this particular person when you didn't know the entire story was wrong.
