Crash's Guitar Buying Tips

1. Unless you are just buying one to learn the basics. Buy quality. No matter how hard you try, you're not going to make a Harmony sound like a Gibson.

2. Sight down the neck of the guitar, and make sure the neck is not bowed. There should either be a rod on the bottom of the neck, where it meets the body, or a small plate, on the top. This rod is used to adjust the neck. If it doesn't have it, don't buy it! Most electrics have them. This is GENERALLY applicable more for acoustics.

3. If it is an electric, actually tap on the pick ups, with it hooked to an amplifier. You may have to move switches to turn them both on. Just because it plays, doesn't mean both pick ups work.

4. If its an electric, plug it in, and wiggle the cord. The most common area for a short, is where the cord plugs in.

5. Look at the gears on the tuners. Make sure they are not chewed up.

6. Wear it. Some guitars, especially BC Rich™ are VERY heavy. It doesn't get lighter over time.

7. Look at the screws on the plates covering it. If they have been removed, someone has been inside it, and you don't know what they have done to it. If the screw heads look bad, it wasn't a music store that did it.

Date: 12/28/2003 2:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 58078    Very interesting tips here Wayne. My husband bought me a guitar for xmas cause I want to learn. Its nothing major right now but just something to start on. I love it though. If I get really into it like I want to we will definitely upgrade in the future.
Date: 12/28/2003 2:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 32133    i didnt think of any of this when i bought mine i just checked it though its fine..........it better be its a $400 guitar
Date: 12/28/2003 3:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12133    The first guitar that I ever bought, was a $120 guitar, and the brand was "State of the Art" good guitar, but when I had my band, and we played on stage, I wouldn't have used it, except maybe as a back up.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 60395    my first electric guitar was a fender , but since i've had about 4/5 but i still have my fender.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12133    I've had quite a few guitars *shrugs* I still prefer the BC Rich Warlocks.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 32133    i went to one place they were selling basses for $150 they were "NEW YORK PRO" guitars. my older brother has an ESP he said there pretty good. i never heard of them befor he got his though.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12133    Yes, ESP is a good brand of guitar
Date: 12/28/2003 3:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 60395    cheepest guitar i ever bought was $175 off ebay and it was one of my favorites
Date: 12/28/2003 3:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 32133    i figured they were good he said there the only kind of guitar a couple of his friends will buy.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    I play an old 1970's Epiphone hollow body, and it plays like a dream. I've always liked older guitars. My other favorite was a 1965 Gibson hollow body that I bought for $20! Several guitar enthusiasts wanted to buy it from me, and I played it for several years (until it met with a horrible fate that I can't even talk about *sniff*). My biggest pet peeve is bad intonation (where a string is in tune lower in the neck, but out of tune higher up the neck). A little neck adjustment is supposed to take care of that, but it doesn't always work. Thanks for the advice!
Date: 12/28/2003 3:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12133    Canoe, setting the adjustment on the bridge should fix your intonation problem.
Date: 12/28/2003 3:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 43592    I play bass a little. I bought a Squire pack, it isn't a great a guitar but it's fine for a starter or someone who just wants to play around with it and not be a hardcore bassist (like me). So if you're goind to really play bass or guitar don't go for Squire. Just because they the by Fender title doesn't mean they're Fenders.
Date: 12/28/2003 4:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 10344    2 months ago I purchased a Angus Young signature series Gibson SG.....this is the most awesome guitar I have ever played. I highly recomend it if you are a serious player...i've played about every guitar you could imagine and this is the smoothest. Downside...it will set you back a bit over $2000 after shipping and handling...but worth it all the same.
Date: 12/28/2003 4:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    We just bought our youngest son a junior acoustic for Christmas..I know virtually nothing about guitars and neither does my husband, so a good friend of ours who plays went with my husband to get it..He says it is a good quality guitar for a starter.
Date: 12/28/2003 4:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12133    Yeah, with the number of people on USM, it is amazing the amount of stuff you can learn, or find out, just by asking.
Date: 12/28/2003 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 24319    lol, Ya know, 3 christmas's ago (counting this past) I got an acoustic Guitar from my mama. And I STILL don't know how to play it. I'm such a loser. Someone cry for me. .. I have NO idea what kind of guitar it is. But I know it's a real good one. I think it ran my mom $120, but that was only because her cousin owns a music shop in New York and he gave her a discount. Yaaay for connections!
Date: 12/29/2003 3:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 61893    One of my close friends got a Eddie Van Halen 5150 for Christmas this year.
Date: 2/27/2004 1:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 56176    i have a yamaha...funny thing my daddy has played blue grass music for 40 years; 25 with
ralph stanley,i hated blue grass, now when i wa attacked by a mt lion in july,my legg was broke, and my foot,ok i was in a wheel chair, and ive ben learning cords, but that timing and rythm, thing gets me any tips? daddy says i'll get it,i get nervous when he trys to show me;its because he's so good and i try so hard too hard and i make mistakes.

Date: 3/17/2004 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    Thanks for the tips . I might be buying a new guitar next month. Right now, I'm mainly playing an Epiphone. Gonna see if I cant save up and get myself a Rickenbacker or a Hofner
